German Reunification Day invites both gratitude and reflection. Gratitude, because the peaceful revolution of 1989 was nothing short of a miracle — a bloodless dismantling of a repressive regime. Reflection, because the wounds of the transition still mark the country —and because

🚨 New publication alert! 🚨 Our article "Cadre networks and bureaucratic careers in autocracies" has just been published online first in @thejop.bsky.social 🎉 — joint work with Alexander De Juan & Jan Pierskalla www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/... Short summary thread below 👇
Title page of an academic paper titled "Cadre networks and bureaucratic careers in autocracies" by Alexander De Juan, Felix Haass, and Jan H. Pierskalla. The abstract examines whether formalized recruitment systems in autocracies eliminate informal personal ties, using biographical data on over 180,000 cadres from the former German Democratic Republic. Difference-in-differences models show that cadre networks aided individuals' career trajectories and that network-based promotions mirrored regime preferences rather than producing decentralized cronyism
