Same has happened in Britain. Speed with which such extreme ideas have become mainstream is concerning.

Harder to think of a clearer example of normalization of far-right discourse. The idea of remigration is now something that can be argued should be a priority of what might very well be the next Spanish government. elpais.com/espana/elecc... 1/2

Project Title: Benchmarking the Autocrat: How Comparisons Shape Regime Support

London School of Economics and Political Science

Value awarded: £10000

Funded by: BIST

Authoritarian governments survive partly by shaping the comparisons their citizens make. People judge a government not against an absolute standard but against a reference point: the country's own past, or other countries. This project asks which comparison most affects whether citizens of an authoritarian state support their government and its institutions. The study offers the first experimental evidence on whether controlling the reference point is a tool of authoritarian resilience, and on which comparisons threaten or reinforce it.

Excited to present some new(ish) data tomorrow on the Campaign Strategy, Persuasion and Mobilisation panel (11:30-13:00) at EPOP! #EPOP2026
Screenshot reading:

Socially-mediated campaign contact: An RCT testing the spillover of SMS messages in the 2025 English local elections

Abstract

The spillover of campaign contact within households is well established, but communication is necessary for effects to spillover to neighbours. Previous work treats spillover as a by-product rather than the primary purpose of contact. However, campaigns are increasingly employing ‘relational’ strategies where they ask supporters mediate contact by communicating with their personal networks. Additionally, existing causally-identified research has modelled spillover in single constituencies, limiting exploration of moderating contextual factors. One underexplored factor that could moderate neighbourhood communication - and thus spillover - is rurality. This paper presents national field experiment conducted with a British political party during the May 2025 local elections. Party members across all areas with elections (N=27,330) were randomly assigned at the neighbourhood level to receive SMS messages asking them to remind their housemates and neighbours to vote. By measuring effects on supporters and their social ties across urban and rural areas, this paper tests the effectiveness of mobilising supporters’ social influence and contributes to the literature on how networks and context moderate political behaviour.

Congratulations to the 2026 APSA Organized Section Award Recipients (Sections 1-20)
In an effort to bring attention to exceptional scholarship, many of APSA Organized Sections have established awards. Currently, there are more than 200 such awards honoring dissertations, papers, articles, books, and career achievement. Winners are generally selected by member committees appointed by the chair or executive committee of the section. The organized section recognizes winners at its annual business meetings, which are held in conjunction with the APSA Annual Meeting.
