1. I can't believe the govt would actively want to invest in companies that use the copyrighted work of British creatives without permission. Doing so is (i) illegal in the UK, (ii) possibly illegal elsewhere, and (iii) clearly antithetical to protecting its citizens and treating them fairly. 7/10

AI companies are destroying our collective shared history to put it into their slop buckets, because the slop they push out would destroy their models if they tried to re-input it
Text reads: This bookseller said his inventory is full of rare, foreign language, and low circulation books, meaning that if they are destroyed in the process of becoming training data, they'll be even harder to obtain.

"AI" is a way for Google etc. to avoid actually doing searches anymore, to keep you from following links and sending traffic to anyone but them. "AI" is the *opposite* of a search engine.

Class, repeat after me: "AI" is not a search engine. "AI" does not search webpages and return results. "AI" scrapes together random shavings from the internet and presents them as though they're answers. If you use "AI" as a search engine, you're better off consulting your own rectum with a mirror.

As far as archaeological photography techniques are concerned, this is... erm... "different". 😬😂
You're not going to believe this. A chair is placed on a Roman mosaic. A man stands on the chair and leans forward for an overhead photo. He leans so far that another young man has to hold him up with a broom pressed into the photographer's chest. A young woman is holding on to the chair to stop the entire mess toppling over and ending in tears.

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.
