Far right commentator and former historian, Drouth Frudley Tedwards, has been *sacked* as a columnist by the Belfast Newsletter. The column, a regular parade of extreme reaction, spitefulness, and even failure to grasp cause and effect, was known to induce howls of laughter over morning coffee.

I’ve come to think maybe that Dundee is the Derry of Scotland, a small, historic, former port city, with fine 19th century buildings, a city that lots of people sadly leave, but with a great public library and local history collection.

Local councillors say strange things: In 1971, Baillie J.S Beange attributed a rate of recorded 17 ‘illegitimate’ births in the village of Grantown on Spey to an ‘influx of beatniks and student types’ from Aviemore, then being developed as a resort town.

So, having located the Dundee Medical Officer’s special (and not digitalised) report on ‘illegitimacy’ in the city from 1967, it can be seen that the majority of registered births to mothers who were unmarried in the city in 1966 were not, as received wisdom would have had it, teenagers…

Perhaps instead of politicians going on about reducing the number of people on benefits, there might instead be a conversation about how the benefit system does not effectively (or at all?) support people who are out work. UC is designed to give as few people as little money as possible.

Great moments in Scottish engineering history: James Watt tries to work out how his phone attaches to his selfie stick.
Statue of James Watt. In his right hand he holds a telescopic stick with a frame at the top; in his left he holds a flat object about the size of a large smartphone. He is scowling at the possibly-not-a-smartphone as if he is tempted to yeet it into the sea. On that basis, it probably _is_ a phone.

Further random thoughts. I went to high school with a guy whose ancestor had helped found the Orange Order. My friend was far from proud of this, and instead played in an experimental band which sounded a bit like Mr Bungle.

Random thought, but I once did an oral history interview with a lady who had once, in a past life, been a typist working in 10 Downing Street. She recalled how, during lairy helicopter flights, PM, Harold Wilson, would produce a flask of brandy and offer it round. 🥃

1980s punk band, Oi Polloi, must be one of Scotland’s more niche cultural institutions, still going today although rarely seen playing on home turf. Enjoyed revisiting their more recent records, and the firm antifascist sentiments expressed in their lyrics, sadly very topical.

Mind-blowing story in Private Eye about how the Telegraph's chief reporter reached out to James Orr (or meant to) after the Channel 4 donation revelations

...within hours of journalists on either the *Guardian* or *Sunday Times* contacting Reform for comment on the same stories ahead of them publishing their own investigations. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice and his fiancée, supposed journalist Isabel Oakeshott, even crowed online about their spoiler tactics.

Not that the *Telegraph* doesn't do its own leg work when reporting on Reform. After James Orr, the party's head of policy, had to resign after a sting by *Channel 4 News* (see "*Right Orr Wrong*, p14"), *Telegraph* chief reporter Rob Mendick texted Orr: "I was hoping to talk to you entirely on background," he schmoozed. "You must be feeling very bruised and I totally Appreciate [sic] the sensitivities. I suspect you deserve better and I wanted to see how I can put the record straight in some way." Alas, instead of the Reformer and Cambridge theologian, Mendick messaged someone else, who shared it with the *Eye*!

I went to secondary school in NI in the early 2000s. There was a strange man who came round to give evangelical Christian infused lectures about the Horrors of Drugs. He liked to tell a story about how a telephone call from either Jesus or God had helped him overcome addiction.
