These are of course very old questions with tremendous recent progress; we focus mostly on the recent progress and what it offers for the next era of studying human genetics in biobanks. Excited this preprint is out and we'd of course love to hear any thoughts!

Genetics matter, but are not determinative for many many human traits. Even if genetics do influence health (or life in general), they do not influence someone's worth as a human being. Genetics just are. They are not good, they are not bad. They just are.

A scientist who just lost her grant cuts straight to the heart of it: “Requiring that NIH only fund work leading directly to a drug or other biomedical intervention… would rule out much basic research funded by the agency.” It’s pathetic & harmful to limit our understanding of health like this

Working on this project was so fun! ❤️ It's really awesome to work with so many passionate scientists who are all committed to improving our field (despite a climate that might not always be so friendly to that) We'd love any feedback, especially from other trainees and early career researchers!

I think this work really underscores that we are at a turning point in human genetics. There is a growing consensus that doing good research in human genetics requires an expanded skillset (including, e.g., one that can navigate the relationship between genetics, ancestry, and pop descriptors) (1/)

Hey Europe: AC saves lives Hey USA: Gun control saves lives Chart by @hannahritchie.bsky.social (see below)
A plot of heat versus gun deaths in Europe and the United States per 100,000 population in 2024. Heat deaths are excess deaths, not deaths recorded as "heat deaths" on death certificates. It is a bar chart. Heat deaths in orange, gun deaths in blue. From left to right the bars are: US — heat (1.94 deaths/100,000 pop); Europe — guns (1.20 deaths/100,000 pop); US — guns (13.27 deaths/100,000 pop, with about 1/3 of those being shaded to show they are homicides vs suicides); Europe — heat (11.22 deaths/100,000 pop).

The chart shows that gun deaths in the US and heat deaths in Europe are pretty close in frequency per capita. Europe is good at protecting people from gun violence, the US is good at protecting people from heat deaths.

did you know i am doing a dissertation on workplace leave use among full-time workers in the US who have experienced miscarriage? well now you do! and if you think you may be eligible, you can take a screener survey at go.uic.edu/leavestudy or scan the QR code. #reprosky #healthpolicy #miscarriage
An image of a pair of hands being held while a clipboard is in one person's lap. The text to the side indicates Participants Needed for a research study on miscarriage and workplace leave policy use among full-time workers. People are eligible to participate if they have experienced a miscarriage at or before 20 weeks gestation, 18+ years of age, they were working full-time at the time of loss, were living and working in the United States, can read and write in English, and have internet access.

Participation requires completion of an eligibility screener that takes roughly 5 minutes and if deemed eligible, will be sent an invitation to the full survey which should take up to 20 minutes. Participants can either scan a QR code or go to go.uic.edu/leavestudy

If people have questions or concerns about participating, they can contact Ashlee Van Schyndel (avansc6@uic.edu) or Dr. Alisa Velonis (avelonis@uic.edu)

Several people hold signs, including one that says “An injury to one is an injury to all.” The subheadline reads, “It wasn’t just a day of protest, boycott or celebration—May Day showed that we, the workers, are all on the same glorious team.” The byline is Hamilton Nolan.

One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.
