I think all of us must seriously confront the prospect that our good-faith critiques can and will be co-opted. This does NOT mean silence is the only option, but careful consideration and open discussion of who we welcome as allies, funders, and champions feels like a bare minimum.

New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

The WNBA Player’s Association issued an excellent (imo) statement yesterday, stressing the league’s values and stating that they won’t be used as political pawns. The league and its individual teams might want to reach out to whoever is doing comms for the WNBPA. Just sayin.

I’m tired of having to say cyclosporida or spell clyclosporiasis. Repurposing the longtime favorite “gastrocatastrophe” and adding “the old Clyclo” to the mix. Maybe “they got cyclosped” or “just a touch of the clospors” to keep things interesting.

In very-related news, our team discovered the limit today on just how many comments & track changes one document can withstand before it crumbles. Not in a “this thing is glitchy” way, think more of a pop-up window says, “Nope, you’re done. No more” Proud of us? Yes. A little scared? Also yes.

A scientist who just lost her grant cuts straight to the heart of it: “Requiring that NIH only fund work leading directly to a drug or other biomedical intervention… would rule out much basic research funded by the agency.” It’s pathetic & harmful to limit our understanding of health like this

New: In about 10 minutes the Senate should start an initial vote on a continuing resolution. The CR contains a provision that would temporarily (but completely) block OMB's proposal to overhaul federal grants. Our story on that Senate measure and some of the pushback which lead to it:

#OldTrailsFire in Spokane now appears to be most destructive wildfire in WA State history by wide margin (650+ structures lost), w/additional TBD losses nearby. Other PacNW fires actively burning, though less destructive, are far larger & could burn for weeks amid severe drought.
