I read the ending and I wanted to koolaid man through a wall!!
Screenshot of article which reads: To restore a functioning and
pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of
democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to
“fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response
to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success,
reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.Screenshot of article which reads: But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome.
When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev-
eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those
who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern
for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the
solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American his-
tory—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed
by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to
defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the
leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

Someone said to me that there are frats everywhere, so why do I seem to have more ire for spaces like Cornell? Money & power. About 1/10 Cornell students have families in the top 1% of income. The institutions are by them, for them. This takes every other dynamic and amplifies it times over.

You cannot hack your way out of a lack of representation.
Figure from https://www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/2026/09/30/how-well-synthetic-samples-replicate-public-opinion/

Showing higher error rates in groups usually underrepresented in surveys, including HS or less education.

From the article:

"The synthetic sample performed especially poorly when it came to replicating the responses of groups including:
Republicans and Republican leaners

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

Again speaking in the academic case: bad reading is downstream of an audience that does not require good reading. Things that I'd guess contribute to that include: increased specialization (fractures the audience), metrics based evaluation (diminishes importance of audience feedback)

Last year, universities had to attest that they wouldn’t do any of the “no-no” work with their federal funding. If they are caught, the money goes away. Now what is “no-no” work? Every institution has their own definition. This has had real consequences, from funding to support to publication.

Important piece from the international perspective. Eugenics (w/ or w/o genetic tools) harms regardless of scientific validity. To add, this described shift is already happening (or in our domestic case, we never left this hellscape). It’s just a matter of degrees and it can always get worse.
“This shift aligns with the selective pronatalism that promotes not simply having children, but particular kinds of children. The result would be a move towards a society in which reproductive choices are judged by the anticipated characteristics of future offspring, and away from reproductive support based on equality and autonomy.”

It is genuinely bonkers how early kids specialize these days. Went to a dance store for my daughter and they were a bit shocked that we were starting at her ripe old age of 8. Heaven forbid we let a kid dilly dally through their extracurriculars and determine their own interests!

Why, or even how, would we expect the universe to reflect the kind of society we desire or ought to live in? Human genetics in itself cannot validate our political or ethical views, or invalidate those of our opponents. We have to argue for those based on how they will affect our fellow humans.
