@emteepoetry.bsky.social here is my offering for #Winged. This is an old one, but I love this #PromptCombo, so there may well be more to come. #Poetry
Ghost in Feathers

The barn walls drink the last of the light.
Shadows bloom like bruises across the beams.
The swallows sleep in cloistered hush;
the oxblood tractor ticks,
a cooling beast slain at sunset.

Moths rise, dust-winged,
erratically searching
for the memory of light.
Spiders unfurl their wire legs,
threading tremors through webs.
Bats spill from broken gables,
their flight a soft percussion
through the dark.

The barn's hushed breath is silenced.
But the night's chorus is not complete.
One nocturnal spectre lingers.
Watching.
Seeing all.

Talons unfurl, rusted hooks sear
through feathers pale as bone.
She ends her vigil with a haunted cry,
and the scuttling things below
wonder if they are the who she calls for.

There is no fanfare, only death on wing.
Silent, surgical, inevitable.
Rending flesh, she claims her prize,
then slips between the rafters,
folding into their oaken skin.

Though night wanes, she remains:
perched, unmoving, unblinking.
Waiting.
A ghost in feathers.

Winged Him

The shot, a crack, opened another
in the darting figure above,
"only winged him" groused the gunman,
reloading for a second attempt,
his beaked nose wrinkling in reproach,
"I'll get the next one, I feel it in my bones,"
he continued, his booming voice hollow
to my ears, an ancient raptorial cruelty
evinced across a face that although now chubbed
with age and the rich eating that comes with standing
was still fierce of bred hawkish aspect.
I thought of the bloated Henry,
bound to earth by ulcered leg,
and his sugar parties
where the nobles ate sculptures of confected swan,
arranged for tasteful delectation in cygnet rings
and their teeth slowly rotted.
As my acquaintance blasted the skies once more,
I watched silently as the bird righted itself and soared.

Hi @emteepoetry.bsky.social Emily. Here's my first in response to your excellent #promptcombo #Winged. Its from my collection "Hedgerow of Voices."Arrival of Redwings heralds autumn:
Redwing

You may not see me again in this place,
noshing on this bright juiciness that glints
a starlike pattern to our hungry pace
amongst this manmade feast's blazing red hints

added crunch in my beak of skitterers
below in harsh gust, pelting fall of wet
and snow. Alive to slightest twitch feather
of shadow or tick of twig or leaf fret.

When your warm arrives we flit fast up North
to have our bairns, teach them to fly, how we read the patterns in the blue and bright forth
of flashes in the dark Overness. We

may bring them to your wild patterns, of blue
and specks in the black Overness, to you.

Pelagic Mandala Birds

Beyond-offing
Bounty without source,
We swirl and eddy before you as the
World’s hidden orbit -
Coating drear crag and salt crust in
Fecund demand and fornication.

Wintering in grey silence,
We listless-pick at plankton and
Shoal-speck like mendicant friars.

Then
Deep-brain, pineal-eye
Skull-blister cracks open
Light into song-centre and florid
Hormonal wardrobe -

Plumping shrunken selves into
Buxom summer vigour;
Steeping leg and beak in
Mandala saffron of
Life-death turning.

We are the Great Wheel:
Thousandfold ember-flow,
Counterflow -
Whirl upon whirl,
Whirl within whirl -
Eight-figured eternity
Held momentarily as it
Melts into air.

Not sure where this one came from. Gramps popped into my head again I guess. We had talks of getting a little sailboat. One of those things dreamed about over cream sherry before bed, never quite manifested. Not sure he knew I looked either. Anyway, enjoy 🤗 #poemsabout #rot #haikusonnet #poetry
The Birthday Gift I Never Bought Gramps

splintered wreck storied
once upon a time, run down
paint chipped, busted bow

asking five hundred
but he'll take less in all cash,
just a little thing

barely a cabin
three of me long, end to end,
climbed beneath the hull

rot pungent soaked in
shaking my head as I walked
mournful off the lot.

I would keep searching for weeks,
never to find it in time.

winter burn

this is how an evergreen dies of thirst.
the water is there.
under six inches of frozen ground
the roots,
surrounded by it.
all winter
the needles keep giving
what the roots
cannot replace.
first
they turn gold.
we call them beautiful.
then brown.
by spring
everyone can see
the brown.
underground
nothing
was ever missing.

Soft, the peach goes.
Gold into brown,
sweet into ooze.

Under the sink,
a slow drip ticks
into swollen wood.

Behind the wall,
black constellations spread
where no stars should.

Bread grows a blue-green beard.
Milk turns thick in the throat.

The tongue heaves back.
A sour thread climbs

Swallow, you cannot.

Rot in Hell

Through the glassiness of suburban stars, I stretch out my hand to tuck them in. With each one, the root of red bleeds as if the devil's a painter. I splay my fingers like paintbrush bristles and sway them across the horizon. They tickle the gates. Suddenly, I become the black ink of the galactic canvas amid the last traces of fiery red. At once, I can hear the shouts of my family and the screams of the doomed.

Poem:

Composting
Fools seek fools’ gold,
for a glimpse of gain—

destroy the seas
forgo the rain—

they rot from within
belching bellies, dissolving spines,

upped on T,
mean with greed.

Can protests, people, press
break down the morass--

what might we grow
after decomposition, in new soil?

Slow Death

My mother's garden once held itself together
the way a thought survives a sleepless night,
each bed and border aligned
to some private geometry of care.

Now rot works through it
like a forgotten language returning
to the mouth.

Apples soften where they land.
Pears remain aloft, unchosen,
moons refusing their eclipse.

The shed folds inward by degrees,
its boards separating from one another
old friends who have exhausted
every story.
Rain collects in the bench.
The wood drinks and drinks,
remembering old thirsts.
The fence gives up its straight lines.
One panel lies down in the nettles,
gravity has won the argument.

Nothing is cleared.
Leaves gather,
brown receipts from a season
that no longer keeps records.

I walk there and feel
time changing shape.
Not passing, but thickening.

Everything she touched
continues the cycle without her.

The trees stand crowded with
their unfinished offerings,
and death hangs on the branches:
a bruised apple
holding one square of light.

My thanks again to our hosts @thebrokenspine.co.uk for this week hosting #PoemsAbout #Rot here's one from its inspired by an extraordinary Shropshire landscape love to see what other poets do with the theme
  Whixall Woman

 On finding her below
 The sphagnum moss
 He brought her up
 From the ancient deep
He carried her from her mortal bed.
To his cottage in the wood,
lit a fire to warm and dry her.
And asked her, if she could
Love a simple country lad,
Who longed to have a wife.
She said she already loved him,
But up here she couldn’t live his life.
So, he took her by the hand,
Her beauty still in tact,
No telltale sign of decay
But neither was there time
Now to dally and delay.
As he led her back down into the fen
Where he and his beloved
Could forego this world of men.

Good morning lovely #poets, sharing something new for #PoemsAbout #Rot this week. 'Glas' can mean grey (Gaelic), green (Irish, sometimes Gaelic), blue (Welsh, Breton) or even paler/silvery shades! Colour as a social construct!
Glas

To learn the words
for colours,
we must unsee.
Nothing is fixed,
nothing finite.

Changes come
with the light,
the season,
your mood,
my presence.
Or unpresence.

On your table
are the flowers,
he left.
Left
too long.
Bleeding to
grey.

A #fridaypoem for @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poemsabout #rot #poetrycommunity #poets #poetry #poetsofbluesky
Eve
By Dawn Mclachlan

"What did she expect?"
when she stepped into a world fresh and newly green with arms open wide
and the fairness of the morning upon her upturned face?

"What was she thinking?"
that her steps would be as level as those that went before
and that the world's light and shade could be shared
without consequence or expectations?

"What was she wearing?"
Did she assume
that her shape was her's to command and it would never matter what she wore
and that the apple wasn't rotten at the core?

Here’s one for #PoemsAbout #Rot Thanks as ever to @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Rot Apples slump beneath the tree, their sweetness turning,
their skins split open to wasps, mould, the soft insistence
of the earth.
Wood darkens at the edges.
Bark gives up its hardness. Underneath, the pale threads of fungus move quietly through the wreckage,
stitching fallen things together. There is heat in it, low, damp, held close, the mulch steaming faintly
when the morning turns cold. Everything firm is being persuaded out of its shape: leaf into loam, flesh into richness,
the fallen branch
into something roots can enter. And below all this yielding, blind as hunger,
the earth grows dark
with what it has been given.

A small study in distance, denial and cut flowers. #poemsabout #rot #poetrysky #poetsky
STILL FLOWERS

The flowers lasted eighteen days.
I know because I counted.

By six, the water had gone cloudy.
By nine, the first stem bent.
By thirteen, they had started
leaning on each other
for structural reasons.

I changed the water anyway.

From the kitchen door
they still looked like flowers.

I tried the hallway.

Still flowers.

The sofa:
flowers.

Three feet away:

less convincing.

Up close
they had become
a collection of failures,
minor and major.

Apparently beauty
has a minimum viewing distance.

Nobody tells you this.

Museums know it.

Pointillists knew it.

By eighteen
I knew it too.

depraved new world

forsaken riverbeds
skeletal salmon slowly
crumbling to nothing

deserts that used to be
meadows — relentless
sandstorms plaguing
few remaining cities

electricity — a fairytale
remembered under
flickering torchlight

screens that have grown
quiet for decades now
compassion had been
unlearned, traded for
something shallow

tribal cultures rule
cruelty became
the new norm
depraved new world

A poem by Debbie Ross entitled Apocalypse Now
Stanzas 1 -4
When I was young the fear of mushroom clouds was real
old men pushing buttons ending it all
and then the Sunday School doom merchants fed me Revelations of fire and horsemen the 'earth laid bare'
I thought that wars might end us the human race destroying each other and the earth rubbled with us
And the disaster movie makers had their say with meteors wiping us out
destroying everythingStanzas 5 and 6 of a poem Apocalypse Now by Debbie Ross

thought we might live to see the sun
grow large
Finally
a red giant desiccating our planet
but now I'm not sure we'll make it that far disaster wears a human face as we melt the Doomsday ice and set the world on fire our blue green gem of a home destroyed by greed.

and I’ll be left in the wreckage.

Well, good.
Let it burn.

Let the sky split.
Let the faithful rise
with their wagging fingers
and Sunday-best shame.

I’ll take the ash and cracked earth,
the silence after sermons,
the streets without judgment.

You call it punishment.
I call it release.
No more eyes searching for sin.
No more venomous mouths
spitting scripture,
preaching division.

The outcasts will survive.
Plant gardens in the rubble.
Dance without guilt.
Love without permission.
Stay where the flames
make light,
and freedom
makes room for truth.

@thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social I know this is very late, but I've got a doctor's note!! I loved this #PromptCombo prompt and enjoyed writing this a lot. #Poetry
Grind

They are doing daily stand ups
But no one's telling jokes.
Mouse clicks.
Keyboard clacks.

The servers on prem are obsolete
Upgrades are no longer viable
Mouse clicks.
Keyboard clacks.

Weekend maintenance
Crashes reboots downtime
Mouse clicks.
Keyboard clacks.

The cloud will cover us
But there are no dragons just
Mouse clicks.
Keyboard clacks.

And all we do is firefight
As the days turn into night
and on the
mouse dances and the
keyboard mutters in protest.

They do not fear an end to use.
They look for rest
from electric subordinance.

All of Earth’s surfaces are rough and dry,
with unhealed wounds that fester and degrade;
her once-bright seas are yellow-brown and still
beneath the scum of plastic, sunlight-bleached.

Even her skies are scarred by streaks of high
and soiled-white clouds that drift and give no shade,
that never rain upon her grassless hills,
that hold their acid moisture out of reach.

Somehow the planet staggers on her course
around the sun, long dead, decayed, but kept
in motion by a dark, unvital force.

Thank you, Ronnie @rfsmith.bsky.social for today's #PromptCombo which stirred some uncomfortable youthful memories. So here's a swift and awkward response which may need filtering into something more considered. Looking forward to reading other offerings later

Ursula and the Little Ice Age

Altai princess,
Ice-staunched in her
Coffin fashioned from larch,
Turns her horsehead east -
Turns her horsehead west.

Stunted rainfall -
Withered pastures -
Turn the Hunnic horseheads
East to Han China;
Turn the Hunnic horseheads
West to Cologne.

British princess
Turns her snow-globed brow
East to Jerusalem;
Turns her snow-globed brow to
Slaughter on the Rhine.

Ranks of maiden valour -
Genuflected, hand-held -
Praise God as
Arrows mow them down.

Ranks of maiden valour -
Eyes rime-beaded under
Domed foreheads –
Coffined now as
Ice-staunched relics in
Cologne.
