For this week's #PoemsAbout #DeadLetters I'm thinking about what has to die for a letter to be dead. @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #prompt #poetry #blueskypoetry #writesky #poetrycommunity #writingcommunity #poets #creativewriting
dead letter

i wash the dishes
in the dark

because i know
where everything is.

the tap.
the soap.
the chipped glass
you always said
to throw away.

remember when
you said
nothing mattered
and i said nothing.

it does.

the glass slips.
i hear it break
somewhere in the sink.

for a while
i leave my hands
where they are.

the tap keeps running.

i am quiet.

you are far away.

or whatever
you are.

eventually
i put my hand
back in the water.

stray

i’m having that nightmare again
the one about the cars--the accident

until i wake
filled with the results of the late night
myself

the only salvation
hot
strong
coffee

later
i walk in the sun
without direction

the purposelessness feels sneaky
like a cold draft

let my mind wander
farther than my feet can carry

imagine myself
getting run down
by a passing car

i stop
when i am far enough away from home
to text
even though i've had my phone
in my hand the whole way

open our messages
type something
delete it

against the traffic i call
listen until
the ringing stops

when it’s my turn
i can’t remember
what to say

half-heartedly watch a movie after the sun goes down but turn it off part way realizing i’ll either cry soon or lose interest and i don’t have the spirit for either instead i try to write and nothing comes out nothing worthwhile only something about that stupid dream i’ve been having since i was old enough to remember i write about how this morning i wondered if my neighbors were dead in their apartment because i could hear their alarm clock going off for over an hour the rational response that they may have just been out didn’t occur to me until later but i select it all with the mouse and hit the delete key create a new document without a name and type

i keep trying to write
about uncertainty
like it's—

i heard you
the first time.

like
comprehension
was the problem.

like i was ever going to remain
open to your
persuasion.

like it's—

say it again
only slower
this time.

as if repetition
might flood in like evidence.

oooh. yes.
go on ahead.

explain it to me
one more time.

like it's uncertainty and not
judgement rendered.

recipe for bread

Begin with two cups of flour.
Make a well and slowly add the water.
Around the outer edge, scatter the salt.
In a smaller bowl, wake the yeast.
Coat your hands with a little oil.
If you prefer a softer loaf, add sugar.

After five minutes, stir the sugar.
If the mixture remains wet, add flour.
Turn it onto the counter with a little oil.
If it refuses to come together, add water.
Give it another ten minutes for the yeast.
Taste what sticks to your finger. Add salt.

If it tastes too sharp, add more salt.
If it has become too stiff, loosen with sugar.
Do not worry if you can no longer smell the yeast.
This can still be corrected with flour.
Keep your hands from sticking with water.
Keep the counter from sticking with oil.

You may now have used rather a lot of oil.
Balance this with another pinch of salt.
If necessary, dissolve more yeast.
There is no harm in another spoonful of sugar.
The mixture should respond to water.
If it does not, add flour.

Do not discard the flour.
Transfer everything to a larger bowl and add oil.
This can still be corrected with water.
There is almost certainly enough salt.
There may now be too much sugar.
This is not necessarily the fault of the yeast.

Begin again with the yeast.
You will need considerably less water.
Do not attempt to remove the sugar.
At this stage, avoid additional flour.
Unless the mixture requires additional salt.
If the mixture requires additional oil—

stop.

Combine the salt with the remaining oil.
Add enough flour to contain the sugar.
Do not add more water. You have lost the yeast.

September 2026 / September 2004

there's nothing i hate more
than sitting in the dark
with the sound of your voice
ringing in my head.

i try to write you a letter.

it feels like that Collins poem
coming out of my mouth.

the one-ton bell.
the weight of the tongue.
the ring.

instead
i write a haiku
about a guy i know
who can never quite find
his apartment after dark:

people tell stories
robert drunk and wandering
not saying we too are lost from home

you were there.
i was here.

or maybe
i have that backwards.

my mother would know
whose fault it was
if i knew how to reach her

For this week's #PoemsAbout #SheddingSkins I'm thinking about things that emerge tender and glistening into tomorrow. #poetry #blueskypoets @thebrokenspine.co.uk @alanparrywriter.co.uk
a very good scrap to put on your table

sometimes the constructed thing
is what allows a truth to exist.

this is obvious
if you've ever written
a poem.

or worn braces.

less obvious
if you've ever constructed
a self.

teeth, apparently,
can be persuaded
by sustained pressure.

eventually
the braces come off.
nobody asks
which teeth
were true.

not to press
my pricky
biological objection
to this whole central metaphor

too far

but now i think
we have a poem
with a problem in it

rather than a poem
explaining
a position

which must mean we're
really getting somewhere.

and like the proverbial snake
who gets shed --

strike a dignified pose
and find out.

For #PoemsAbout #EndOfSummer, I'm thinking about horrible little grammatical transformations. @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poetry #poem #writing #PoetryCommunity #BlueSkyPoets #writingcommunity
she wanted to write a poem about
the end of summer

and all she could think about
was murder.

which is ridiculous.

or isn't.

because give us a woman—
let's call her summer—

and sooner or later
somebody will kill her.

in the horror show.
in the novel.
in the prestige crime drama.
in the true crime documentary
about the crime
that was true.

for love.
for jealousy.
for leaving.
for staying.
for saying yes.
for saying no.

for being in the first act
and necessary
to the second.

ask Shakespeare.

ask YouTube.

ask the man on television
explaining that nobody
could have seen this coming.

anyway.

she wanted to write
a poem about
the end of summer.

something about
an amusement park.

something about
the ache
after the party.

but summer
is already dead.

everybody loves
a dead woman
once she becomes
a story.

I understand this machine.

You could claim that I am
bored by performance.

Fine.

I'm bored by the assumption
that the interesting thing about it
is the performer.

And like all boring,
intellectually curious questions,
we could wax poetical about how
the participant doesn't necessarily
know
what role they're playing

blah de dah dah dah.

That nobody even knows
they are participating.

That refusal may circle us in.

Observation changes everything.

Choices have consequences
that aren't always apparent
right away.

Yes. Fine.

All of that gobbledygook.

Main stage syndrome.
Everybody posing
before anybody's looking.

Everybody looking there.
Nobody looking here.

As if looking
wasn't already doing something.

As if leaving
gets us out of it.

And here we are

wearing out our part
before we decide whether
to even
buy the ticket.

To make a jacket,
you need fabric and an idea.
A sewing machine helps,
but thread and needle will do.

You outgrow the memories—
movie stubs,
tobacco flaking the seams.
Shed it.
Stitch it back together.
Give it away
to someone who needs it more.

A jacket has arms,
a front and a back.
It’s worn for weather,
or zipped up to hide.
Armor. Inheritance.
Absence you can wear.

In my memory,
I’m still wearing the jacket you hated.
Left it on a southbound train—
the day we jumped the ticket gates
at Euston Station.
That stupid patch pocket
always leaking change,
always reaching
for your fingers.

Radio Silence

I clutch at what the borders of the paper contain. The writing on the reverse side presses through like a hidden meaning. I don't turn it over. I don't read the words. I already know what they say.

Yesterday hasn't stayed put. It pours into each day the way sunlight finds every crack in a room.

We don't have a name for this. The habit of never letting go of a string. The fear that if we finally loosen our grip, we'll discover nothing was ever tied to the other end—that our imagination was the tether all along.

And yet I keep holding on.

Because without the weight of faith and love and desperation, I think I would float clean away.

A station bleeding through the dark.

The Listener

At ninety-two, Tacey Swash lived behind a tackle shop near the tourist beach on the Duwamish. She was said to have the softest, most soothing, and most powerful voice ever to fall upon the ears of the men of earth and the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

Tacey spoke so quietly that people leaned closer, and that was the problem.
When they got too close, they could hear their own thoughts loud as the storm alarm bells.

Old sailors claimed she carried every conversation she'd ever heard folded into the lining of her coat. Others swore a colony of ghosts followed her from room to room, whispering corrections. It was said that when she swam, black fish rose from the depths and fed on every word people wished they could take back.

The town depended upon Tacey the way sailors depend upon lighthouses.
From a distance.

She spent most evenings alone on the beach.
The black fish gathered offshore.
The waves landed like ghost whispers.

And somewhere in town, another crowded room was slowly inventing a story.

A shoutout to @johnchmura.bsky.social, who accepted my #BadErections challenge after misreading a line in one of my poems and who consistently leaves some of the most thoughtful comments in the #PoemsAbout community. Thank you, John! I've attached my own bad erection below. Feel free to join in.

Collapse

Germany left me believing
that divisions could end.

Holding a piece of that wall
in my own two hands

taught me everything
I needed to know about change.

About the quiet pressure
of collapse.

I spent the next decades
discovering the same thing
about people.

At least the first wall
I watched fall

wasn't mine.

How to Spend One Minute Properly

Hop on one foot and pat your head
just nod instead
then touch the floor
and close the door

Say Bloody Mary to the sink
and do not blink
then face the drain
then speak your name

Find a clover and pick it up
for your good luck
trip on a crack
then pay it back

For this week's #PoemsAbout #EarnTheRight, I'm thinking about how proximity is not witness. @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poetry #poem #writing #PoetryCommunity #BlueSkyPoets
proximity
like bad directions and barking dogs is not witness
to be
is to be loved
a wish
proximity another
neither enough
when the world stands beside us
and denies who we are
