Renovations

A jack of all trades progresses in the macabre masquerade of our brave new world.
Where next steps are coherent with opaque reason.
Where justice is repulsed by the beak.
Where rhyme has fallen in step with insanity.

I remember this one little moment, almost too small to notice.
When bravery quietly blenched.
When skulls were ripped off of their own thoughts.
Where hearts started gleaming in wintry light - frozen.

Except for mine.
Mine was aching.
Feelings still smear over my lined face.
How dare I not be prettier?!

Grief might not be spry and I might not be able to move mountains, but at least I'm still alive.

I know this doesn't change a thing.

Tomorrow I'll plant more chrysanthemums.

The Hole

A man found a hole outside his house.
He broke open a mountain, filled the hole with stones and the next day it was empty, and there was no more mountain.
He felled a forest, and counted how many logs it took to fill the hole, finding that it ate more each day, and soon there was no forest left.
He, by means of cunning and a sneaking brutality rose to become king, whereby he commanded the yawning hole to close. The next morning it was bored deeper into his soil.
He raised an army and sent it forth and it did conquer lands of plenty and he scattered the bones of his enemies into the darkness, but it wanted plenty more, and thus the hole grew larger.
He fled his castle as the hole sapped the strength from its walls and they soon fell and it devoured them and all within his fastness.
He ran by day and by night, through lands he had barrened to escape this ravenous emptiness, and always the hole was behind him.
He came across a man sitting by a gurgling stream, open book in hand, reading to small child by his side, both bathing in the tinkling words. "Run you fool, run from the hole!" The man looked up in puzzlement and stood, moving away from the spittling froth of this ragged warning and, in care, lifted the girl at his feet. "Run you fool-" It was too late, the man turned, child in arms as the hole gaped beneath him. And then he walked, as if on air, over the ghastly aperature that yet advanced.

The fields are black beneath an incensed sky that is gently blushing, soon after, as if ashamed of this outburst on such a halcyon morning. A few last stars remember the lights of swinging lanterns which were carried over these acres at three knocks past midnight, asking Demeter to nurture the grounds for the next luscious harvest. But for now, fruition fades as the leaves are wearing translucent gold before they woefully sail to the ground.

Some dance through the air as if to defy gravity. But no matter how rigorously they ride gust after gust, how tenaciously they cling to those last colours, they must land eventually. My practised smile slips for a moment while I cry one little tear. It shimmers on my cheek before it falls, too.

Nothing is forever, I think, and thereby release the anchor. But something doesn't ring true. Change is eternal. Souls are eternal. And some bonds between soulmates are, too. But perhaps eternity is not the same as forever.

Something tingles down my spine.

Too many blind spots from within this box.

The keynote is experience. Independence is as much an illusion as is dependency. Free will is as much an illusion as is control. And then, again, it is all that counts.

Therefore, live deeply, spare nothing, let life put its mark on you, leave the book of the dead closed. Because, after all, what is the purpose of life if not living?

Dead Letters

They dressed him in bronze,
raised him above the traffic
to applause.

A century ripened beneath his shoes.

Then rope.
Bronze struck stone, shoulder first,
the city ringing through his body.

Harbour water closed over his mouth.

They dragged him out bedraggled,
silt in his cuffs, weed between his buttons,
stinking of still water.

Paint across his chest:
the city writing back.

Now, behind museum glass,
he dries badly.

This morning a letter lies
against the empty plinth,
rain loosening the ink
into the stone,
an address
still valid.

When I tell you that I don't care
You absent mindedly touch your hair

When I tell you that I am done
You open the box of doughnuts and take one

When I say that I have had enough
You give an ornamental pillow a fluff

When I stand and turn to go
You begin to look up very slow

When I take that first loud stride
You finally put the doughnut aside

When I say that it's too late
You toss your hands and rage 'thats just great'

When I simply just don't turn back
Your voice raises in a panicked attack

When I open the front door
You sob breathlessly on the floor

When I leave because we're through
You cough out 'but I love you'
