This one was a written a long time ago but fits the theme @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poemsabout #deadletters
Yours Always

I fold the smooth 68gsm sheets in half.

Ellen yells from the lounge Mum, the internet isn't working' then without hesitation 'Never mind.'

The heavy stock envelope matches the cream paper.

I slip my inkings into their snug enclosure.

Tim emerges from the depths of his bedroom to tell me,
"The last male white rhino has died, fucking humans.'

I write your address with the flourish of cherished strokes, stick down the flap, place the stamp in its rightful place.

My phone lights up with notifications; a Facebook memory of our Anniversary pics, the fridge suggesting a recipe using the broccoli that is tiring, seven new emails.

I place the envelope in my bag.
The car radio talks of how robotic telesurgery via high-speed internet is changing healthcare,
followed by the importance of drones in modern warfare.

I sit in my usual place, next to your gilded name.

I take the envelope from my bag, and release my thoughts from their ink;
so they can stretch for that place we will never reach.

dead letter

i wash the dishes
in the dark

because i know
where everything is.

the tap.
the soap.
the chipped glass
you always said
to throw away.

remember when
you said
nothing mattered
and i said nothing.

it does.

the glass slips.
i hear it break
somewhere in the sink.

for a while
i leave my hands
where they are.

the tap keeps running.

i am quiet.

you are far away.

or whatever
you are.

eventually
i put my hand
back in the water.

Weather Inversion

Grief tags me when I learn that
You have just months left to live.

Mythos and lore speak of a
Sacred threshold that is
Crossed at such moments:

Brittle ground I tread -
Fragile air I breathe.

Late winter, two months before
You pass:

Thick fog squats down to dampen
Town and valley in a rare
Weather inversion that leaves
Peak and big sky unsullied.

Murk in April -
Two days after you pass -
Dulls my brain,
Muddles my sight.

Large, booming bird -
Rare in these parts -
Takes flight from an islet in the
Old abbey fishpond.

Heart gleams,
Vision brightens -

Now
I understand.

#PoemsAbout #DeadLetters @thebrokenspine.co.uk It helps to know Bu Shi is a muse/alter ego I created in the early 2010s to post haiku/senryu, it also helps to know they don’t use the lettters L and T, but the poem uses all of the other letters. Our pseudo relationship is sometimes contentious.
DUBIOUS BU

bu emerges from a crack underground
open hand punch
hammering an arc of misshapen force

nor misspoken nor misheard

was a bad poem worsened
by jagged end rhymes
before even being conceived

weaned on my screams and misgivings

bad karma broken casino spinner
dopamine miser sucking my money sac
receiving receiving receiving never giving back

aces queens and princes join voracious jokers

oversized zippers sever
spewing sacred sera in free mason jars
examined by hydrographic surveyors

bu says form precedes usage

do you agree

For #PoemsAbout #DeadLetters, here's a slightly crazed point of view: The Dead Letter. (*waves* to @alanparrywriter.co.uk 😁 )
The Dead Letter
We keep his secret, we remaining in the alphabet. He just got weary
of holding up that space between K and L. He always felt misplaced,
he cried to himself in the night. His shape became…
unrecognizable and after a while no one knew his name.
He slipped off the page. We do not forget.

Dead Letters

Love letters discovered;
Tied lovingly with a bow.
I brush away the cobwebs;
Unfold brittle edges.
A catch in my breath as I read,
Full throated young love expressed.
I remembered our love and wept.
So hopeful and naive.
Heavy hearted,
I coud bear no more;
It was time for cremation;
Dead love, dead letters;
Ashes of both,
All that remains.

Dead Letters
By Dawn Mclachlan

You said you said sorry
but that’s not what I heard
from words that struggled for air
and writhed in the death of Meaning
Words distorted in the telling
as Reason chased its tail

You said you said sorry
but that’s not what I heard
because I was watching high cirrus clouds
smudge the perfect blue with icy veils
and as sure as night follows
I knew the rain would come

Dead Letters

They dressed him in bronze,
raised him above the traffic
to applause.

A century ripened beneath his shoes.

Then rope.
Bronze struck stone, shoulder first,
the city ringing through his body.

Harbour water closed over his mouth. They dragged him out bedraggled,
silt in his cuffs, weed between his buttons,
stinking of still water.

Paint across his chest:
the city writing back.

Now, behind museum glass,
he dries badly.

This morning a letter lies
against the empty plinth,
rain loosening the ink
into the stone,
an address
still valid.

Good morning and happy Friday! Here's an old poem I revised for #PoemsAbout #DeadLetters. Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Poem:

Erasure

Here is where time unfolded wings
and flew from

the straight path I had imagined

the stars have shifted, I cannot
navigate this whirligig expanse,

the parallel universe
where you wrote her letters
and she slept in my place.

Now I burn every word,
all the traces, hints, glimpses–

love and us,
erased.

I wrote this on my travels and it seems to fit #PoemsAbout #Strays
Making Amends On the way to the coffee shop beggars raise weather worn hands, palms open beneath bright signs as scooters split the rain
and phones flare in every hand. Inside, an American says
he has left America for good. Trump, he says, with the small embarrassment
of someone explaining a stain. His father was here once, twenty years old, a family in debt
and no bone spurs. He came with other boys
carrying rifles, photographs,
leaving questions no peace could answer.
The son has come by choice.
He speaks of debts, of what one country owes another, then lifts his cup and watches the street
through glass.
His father went home in '75. Later came Đổi Mới:
shutters lifted, English climbed the walls, Credit cards welcome
flowered on doors.
The waiter brings him the bill.
He taps without contact,
and waits for the screen's approval

stray

i’m having that nightmare again
the one about the cars--the accident

until i wake
filled with the results of the late night
myself

the only salvation
hot
strong
coffee

later
i walk in the sun
without direction

the purposelessness feels sneaky
like a cold draft

let my mind wander
farther than my feet can carry

imagine myself
getting run down
by a passing car

i stop
when i am far enough away from home
to text
even though i've had my phone
in my hand the whole way

open our messages
type something
delete it

against the traffic i call
listen until
the ringing stops

when it’s my turn
i can’t remember
what to say

half-heartedly watch a movie after the sun goes down but turn it off part way realizing i’ll either cry soon or lose interest and i don’t have the spirit for either instead i try to write and nothing comes out nothing worthwhile only something about that stupid dream i’ve been having since i was old enough to remember i write about how this morning i wondered if my neighbors were dead in their apartment because i could hear their alarm clock going off for over an hour the rational response that they may have just been out didn’t occur to me until later but i select it all with the mouse and hit the delete key create a new document without a name and type

By Dawn Mclachlan

I read once that shrews don't really understand that we exist. In their minds we are as vast and unknowable as mountains, as silent and slow moving as trees. Their hearts beat 1000 times a minute and to them we are glacial in our pace.
Imagine living in a world where it's possible to stray wild beyond the comprehension of man.

We once placed our tent
Across the tracks of a shrew
And still he ran through

Here are two ‘pi-ku’ poems for #fragmentsfriday with @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social I discovered pi-ku reading Merril D Smith’s blog @merrildsmith.bsky.social – the form follows the number for π, 3.14, and this determines the number of syllables per line. #vsspoem

For #PoemsAbout #Strays for @thebrokenspine.co.uk :
I'm Feral

I'll trash your tidy desk,
slap a photocopy of my bare arse,
above it that says
"kiss my arse".

I'll tip your rubbish bins
down the street

My fretted crests'll slop
over your
carefully built barriers

My spontaneous fires'll burn
your precious stuff

My earth'll move your home
shatter it to splinters

break your neat pavements
pothole your smooth roads

flood your flood defences
overgrow your borders
put weeds in your flowerbeds

steal your freshly sown seeds
bloody your egg laying chickens

swear at your mam and dad
then give them a hug

wide eyed I'll scarper
with a whistle
and skip down your street

shout "Anyone wanna shag me?"

And say, "Now, do you love me?"
