A close up shot of a Raven in flight, in side profile. The bird takes up most of the frame and is flying from left to right, so that its right side is visible.
It has a strong, thick bill which is slightly hooked at the end. Its wings are in an upward beat and end in splayed fingers. Its tail is almost a single feather thick.

Per @robcrank68.bsky.social #BirdOfTheDay #BestOfTheMonth my best birds of the month (not best photos here) were about the B’s… (more in Alt) Barn owls, Barn Swallows, Bitterns and Buzzards #birds #photography #ECK #ukbirds #wildlife #ukwildlife
I had a great few days in September photographing birds and wildlife in Norfolk especially barn owls. This is a more distant shot of one of the owls in a tree facing an adjacent meadow from where it flew off into the distance but thankfully returned a bit later.I’ve posted a photo of these young barn swallows perched on a lighting wire previously and have more that I haven’t yet processed. It was a pleasure to spend time with them and watch their busy parents feed them repeatedly.Over at my local nature reserve I’ve been lucky to observe and photograph some of the bitterns during September and arguably more than ever before. This bittern in flight changed reed beds and gave me a chance to grab some photos as it flew from right to left in front of some trees.I’ve photographed buzzards in Norfolk and locally during September and this shot of a buzzard with its wings wide open and from below was above a meadow in Norfolk.

🪶 Rob has chosen #BestOfTheMonth as #BirdOfTheDay theme; you best shot for September - Quiet month for me; this encounter with a Juvenile Sparrowhawk was definitely the highlight #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #Raptor #BirdOfPrey #Hawk
A Female Sparrowhawk sitting in a field of long grass. The bird is left of centre of the shot, facinf the camera and sitting in long grass so its bottom half is not visible.
The bird has a hooked beak with yellow at the base and bright yellow eyes. Its has a brown head with a prominent white eye stripe above the eye. Its back is brown and its breast and underbelly are whitish with strong grey-brown barring throughout.
Its is looking towards the right of the shot so that the right side of its head is shown.
In the foreground an out focus tuft of grass runs along the bottom of the frame, obscuring the bottom of the bird. Some kind of thistle can be seen to the left of the bird with pinkish flowers visible.
The background is long green grass, thistles and other vegetation

Good morning! Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BokehBirds - any bird captured with a soft, muted or blurry background, like this lovely Long-Tailed Tit. Bonus points for any bokeh balls! ☺️🪶📷️ Alt: #AwkwardAvian - any bird captured in a silly, clumsy or strange position! Happy Monday everyone! 🕊️ 👋
A photograph of a long-tailed tit a small, round bird facing towards the right. The bird has a fluffy white head and chest, accented by a broad, dark black stripe that runs over the top of its head from its bill to its back. A hint of soft pink coloration tints its flanks and shoulders. Its bill is tiny and dark, and its eye is framed by a faint yellowish ring. The bird is nestled among several bare, light grey tree branches that cut diagonally across the scene the one above slightly shadowing its head. Two prominent branches cross behind and below the bird, while a softer, out-of-focus branch arches over the top left corner of the frame. The background is a soft, blurred wash of light blue, lilac and pale buff coloured bokeh, with some bokeh balls from the bright, open sky filtering sunlight through the woodland canopy.

Are Oystercatchers #Seabirds? Well, if not, at least this one is #Airborne lol 🪶 #BirdOfTheDay
Against a backdrop of blue waves, a black-and-white Oystercatcher flies past an outcrop of rock (bottom right of the image). His wings are outstretched and angled downward at what is probably the elbow joint. The Oystercatcher has the characteristic orange (carrot-like) beak. He is a black bird with a stripe of white across the back of both wings and a pointed patch of white on his back that stops short just at the tips of his wings.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Pairs as #BirdOfTheDay theme; photos with pairs of the same species Alternative is #Green, in the background not the bird Another Twofer; a pair of young wrens against a green background. #birdphotography #ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #GreenSat
A pair of fledgling wrens perched on branches in the forest. The birds are either side of the centre of the shot, both facing the camera but turned slightly towards the left so that their left sides are showing.
Both birds are quite round in shape with their tails standing up behind them. They have slender, yellow beaks with a large mouth gape. They are brown, darker on the back than on the underparts. They have white stripe above the eyebrow and the wings and tail have delicate barring.
The one on the right is perched on the end of a small, cut branch while the one on the right is straddling two branches, one of which continues up between the birds in the foreground. Another couple of branches can be seen behind the bird in the right.
The background is an out of focus green from the forest vegetation

Weather Inversion

Grief tags me when I learn that
You have just months left to live.

Mythos and lore speak of a
Sacred threshold that is
Crossed at such moments:

Brittle ground I tread -
Fragile air I breathe.

Late winter, two months before
You pass:

Thick fog squats down to dampen
Town and valley in a rare
Weather inversion that leaves
Peak and big sky unsullied.

Murk in April -
Two days after you pass -
Dulls my brain,
Muddles my sight.

Large, booming bird -
Rare in these parts -
Takes flight from an islet in the
Old abbey fishpond.

Heart gleams,
Vision brightens -

Now
I understand.

🪶 Good Morning Everybody, Happy Wednesday Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Raptors; any bird of prey Alt. is #Corvids; any member of the crow family. - A Buzzard on a dead tree in the rain - A curious Eurasian Jay in close up #birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdsofbluesky
A Common Buzzard perched on a dead tree in the pouring rain. The bird is right of centre of the shot, with its back turned to the camera but its head turned around to stare at it.
The bird has a brown head, paler around the bill, which is black and hooked. It has a yellow cere above the beak. Its back is a lightly mottled brown, darker as it gets to the tail.
The tree is fully dead with patches of bark missing along the trunk and branches. The trunk travels up along the right hand side of the frame and a horizontal branch, with multiple side branches, holds the buzzard. Another, smaller branch is jutting out above it.
The rain is heavy and large drops can be seen throughout the shot. It gives the shot a hazy appearance. The background is an out of focus wall of trees leaves. A Eurasian Jay in close up perched at the top of a small bush. The bird is centre of the shot, facing left so that it’s left side is visible.
It has its head raised in an alert pose and is glancing at the camera slightly. It has a thick black bill, white throat and crown, which is streaked with black and a prominent black steak from its beak to its shoulder. Its plumage is pinkish, with bright blue and white barring on the wing coverts, turning to black and white behind it.
Some barely visible, out of focus vegetation in the foreground gives a hazy effect to the birds feet and tail. It is perched on a bare branch, just visible at the bottom of the shot, which has a spur travelling upwards behind the bird to the right. A bush with small, oval green leaves is in the bottom left and the background is a white sky with some out of focus branches visible throughout.

A tiny Goldcrest perched on a slender branch, surrounded by lush green leaves. The bird’s delicate greyish-buff plumage is softly illuminated, with a vivid yellow-orange crown stripe catching the light. Its fine, pointed bill and large dark eye are clearly visible as it looks upward, while its fine feathers glow against the darker, softly blurred woodland background. The natural shadows create a beautiful, intimate woodland portrait.

A Grey Crowned Crane, taken in captivity, standing on mown grass looking at the camera.
The bird is right of centre of the frame, facing the camera so that it’s looking directly with the left side of its body visible. Its has a black forehead and white cheeks patches, its beak is a grey colour with visible nasal holes on the top. It has long grey feathers along its neck, turning to a darker grey on the underbelly and back. The wings are white, turning to black at the ends and tail. Its legs are long and black.

Autumn is a time for berries so today's #BirdOfTheDay is #BirdsWithBerries Any bird captured with berries, like this beautiful Bohemian waxwing 📷️ 🪶 ❤️ Alt: #BirdyLongLegs Any bird with legs that look way too long for its body! I'm heading out shortly but I will catch up later. Happy Wednesday! 😊👋
A photograph of a Bohemian waxwing bird perched amidst a dense thicket of cotoneaster branches heavily laden with clusters of vibrant red berries. The bird is positioned near the centre of the frame, facing right as viewed, and has just eaten a berry. Its smooth, greyish pinky brown plumage has a soft, almost velvety texture. The waxwing features a prominent, swept-back crest on its head and a distinct, sharp black mask running across its eyes down to a black throat patch. The bird's wings display intricate markings, including a bold black band outlined with bright yellow stripes along the primary feathers. Its short tail ends in a brilliant, crisp yellow band. The background is a complex network of tangled branches, leaves and berries. While the immediate surrounding branches and bright red berry clusters are sharply in focus, the foreground and background blurs out softly.
