A small study in distance, denial and cut flowers. #poemsabout #rot #poetrysky #poetsky
STILL FLOWERS

The flowers lasted eighteen days.
I know because I counted.

By six, the water had gone cloudy.
By nine, the first stem bent.
By thirteen, they had started
leaning on each other
for structural reasons.

I changed the water anyway.

From the kitchen door
they still looked like flowers.

I tried the hallway.

Still flowers.

The sofa:
flowers.

Three feet away:

less convincing.

Up close
they had become
a collection of failures,
minor and major.

Apparently beauty
has a minimum viewing distance.

Nobody tells you this.

Museums know it.

Pointillists knew it.

By eighteen
I knew it too.

Good morning lovely #poets, sharing something new for #PoemsAbout #Rot this week. 'Glas' can mean grey (Gaelic), green (Irish, sometimes Gaelic), blue (Welsh, Breton) or even paler/silvery shades! Colour as a social construct!
Glas

To learn the words
for colours,
we must unsee.
Nothing is fixed,
nothing finite.

Changes come
with the light,
the season,
your mood,
my presence.
Or unpresence.

On your table
are the flowers,
he left.
Left
too long.
Bleeding to
grey.

More and more often, I make lists, write poems, take notes as I walk, of all the things I will miss when I leave this place. We have reasons for moving on, but there are so many reasons to stay. The reasons are things that don't belong to me, don't care about me at all, but it's enough to know they are there and to see them from time to time.

Good morning and happy Friday! Here's an old poem I revised for #PoemsAbout #DeadLetters. Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Poem:

Erasure

Here is where time unfolded wings
and flew from

the straight path I had imagined

the stars have shifted, I cannot
navigate this whirligig expanse,

the parallel universe
where you wrote her letters
and she slept in my place.

Now I burn every word,
all the traces, hints, glimpses–

love and us,
erased.

A Black Sapphire

I read that letter: ten years ago she wrote.
When the drizzle of her hair was a black sapphire.
Her skin a sandy storm, the sky to go before her eyes.
And nothing holding us back from the sea and its tides.

When the drizzle of her hair was a black sapphire.
Sometimes dawn tells, sometimes its afterglow hides.
And nothing holding us back from the sea and its tides.
I want to meet again before the darkest woods.

Sometimes dawn tells, sometimes its afterglow hides.
Where storms bear names of thunder, I’ll abide.
I want to meet again before the darkest woods.
A sax that plays the night into a thousand years.

Where storms bear names of thunder, I’ll abide.
She be my fire road, misty grass and bride.
A sax that plays the night into a thousand years.
I’ll stay beside her, even when her eyes turn into fear.

She be my fire road, misty grass and bride.
I read that letter ten years ago she wrote.
I’ll stay beside her, even when her eyes turn into fear.
When the drizzle of her hair was a black sapphire.

exploring the capital on foot
still blistered from my first

movies about love crossing
borders while our chances
withered like the poppies

through time cutting me open

string of postcards ruptured

promised scars and nothing
but my own breathing through

Weather Inversion

Grief tags me when I learn that
You have just months left to live.

Mythos and lore speak of a
Sacred threshold that is
Crossed at such moments:

Brittle ground I tread -
Fragile air I breathe.

Late winter, two months before
You pass:

Thick fog squats down to dampen
Town and valley in a rare
Weather inversion that leaves
Peak and big sky unsullied.

Murk in April -
Two days after you pass -
Dulls my brain,
Muddles my sight.

Large, booming bird -
Rare in these parts -
Takes flight from an islet in the
Old abbey fishpond.

Heart gleams,
Vision brightens -

Now
I understand.

A NEW CAR

He always liked a new car
endlessly patrolling town
to ferret out the best deal

after he’d stopped driving
and then walking
and then sitting
he still talked about it

as if life were a circle that
always returned on itself
given enough time
and not a tightening knot

to grin in blazing sun
to roar on open roads
a hope for better times
or for any times at all

Night Birds

A stray thought f l u t t e r e d

into my mind

crossing neuron seas
on albatross wings

collecting shiny flotsam
with magpie dedication

gathering others

a murder of crows

a murmuration

filled my dream horizons.

The thought constructed a calamity nest,
in it, laid an anxiety egg

that hatched words like a star
shedding light

silvering the surface,
sinking below.

Stray
By Dawn Mclachlan

I read once that shrews don't really understand that we exist. In their minds we are as vast and unknowable as mountains, as silent and slow moving as trees. Their hearts beat 1000 times a minute and to them we are glacial in our pace.
Imagine living in a world where it's possible to stray wild beyond the comprehension of man.

We once placed our tent
Across the tracks of a shrew
And still he ran through

Poem:

The End of August

This summer of storms and fire
is winding down,

still hot, leaves and grass still emerald,
the sunflowers nod and smile
like cheerful neighbors
as you walk by

your lengthened shadow trailing behind
and ghost vapors in the sky,

you watch the V of geese

wanting it to be
a sign of hope
come dark November.

Happy Friday @thebrokenspine.co.uk and @alanparrywriter.co.uk here’s a #PoemsAbout #TheEndOfSummer
Sometimes

Sometimes I think,
this is all I wanted:
this view from the ridge,
this summer blue,
this ripening harvest;
this light,
filtered through
beech leaves;
the sound of the breeze .

Other times,
there can only be
the rumble of the sea
on shingle,
the salt smell of morning;
the long climb down
from Golden Cap
to Seatown, and me
thinking, yes, this is
everything, this is
everything I wanted.

Then there is now,
when I look up into
the sapphire morning sky
and see the swifts;
their boomerang wings slice
my heart, and I stand here
thinking, yes, they are taking
the summer with them.

After the Summer

Seven weeks now
since you drifted out
from shore

much love, much missed

you watched your life
from the safe distance
of the sea

all the vibrancy, all the noise,

summer lilts in velvet nights
scorching silk days

so elegant and temporary
this lust for life

a memory of you

It’s the story, stupid
I had been going to write a post about the writing process, what inspires it and what drives the motion, but in the end, there was not much to say. We’re told that all stories are the same and have all been written over and over by countless authors, and we have taken that to mean that the most unique, worthy writing, in prose and poetry, is about the personal, about feelings.

TRENCH

Along the long abandoned railroad
right of way, the scrabbling plow pulls hard,
cutting cornrows in the gloomy loam
between unneeded, unwelcome developments,
hollow husks of framed estate homes
held in the death grip of failing banks
whose decimated staffs hunger
at desks full of unprinted leases
begging like pound pups
for moneyed elites’ with soft-handed signatures,
but relief is rare and the fiscal cupboards
as bare as Trump’s delusive tariff shelf.

Needing to feel earth, again,
I walk barefoot
in an unforgiven steel-sliced groove
under the grade of the gravel embankment.
My little pup negotiates
shoulder high mounds
as I pull bricks from a frowning furrow.
One I pitch at a utility pole and one
I throw up on the county road.

Poem:

Ebb and Flow

Furrowed brows of dusty ground
bulldozed, drilled,
deep cuts under deep sea,
slashed, sliced,

suctioned, sifted
over ciphers of ancient life,
where spirits dance
and ghost forests stand sentinel

unburied treasures uncovered
in earth-aching splits
buildings topple

ashes, ashes
we all fall down

as the wind whirls, gyres widen,
the heavens hold their tears

release them

Mainstage

I drag myself through scenes,
a bit‑part actor trapped in a
script written by someone
who never cared if I could breathe.

Every line tastes like dust.
Every cue feels like a punishment.
This was never my main stage.
I know that now.

The boards beneath me groan
tired of holding up a body
that doesn’t belong in the light.

I held on to a promise
my moment would come.
Somewhere, a part waited
for me to be cast.

But hope is a rotting set
stale greasepaint clinging
to roles decided
before I ever opened my mouth.

A life spent hitting
someone else's marks,
while rehearsing
for a show that will never open.

I am typecast.

Poem:
Folios, Incomplete

In the theater of the universe
filled with nebulae, black holes,
wonder

our blue planet is not even close
to the main stage,

it’s the ticket taker
or the kid sweeping the floor

and yet

here we are,
each of us a star

the hero of our story

with a limited run,
no sequel,

exit, stage left, unpursued

the ghost light burns

Here’s one inspired by the great Kenneth Williams for #PoemsAbout #MainStage and many thanks as ever to @alanparrywriter.co.uk & @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Infamy?
Infamy!
They have all got it in for me and I've got it in for them, darling.
"Ooh, matron."
Enter:
a vowel in high heels, a consonant with a twitch.
Patent-leather diction.
"Stop messing about!"
Wrist conducting the orchestra of national repression.
He knew England liked its scandal but only if it came properly wrapped in pronunciation; plummy, precise.
"Ooh, Julian, ain't he bold?"
So, he gave them flourish.
Falsetto as fig leaf.
A laugh sharp enough to slice the Sunday roast and tweak the parson's nose.
(More tea, Vicar?) Underneath?
Silence.
Infamy
for Kenneth Williams
A tongue honed on disappointment.
A man who could file a pause to a needlepoint.
The diaries whisper.
No studio laughter now.
Just a teacup cooling beside the telephone.
He made a living out of the raised eyebrow, that semaphore of defiance, until even the eyebrow grew tired.
Infamy, yes.
But no applause.
Exit, pursued by silence.
Oh stop it.
End this carry on.
