I carry pieces of the past around in my pockets like lint or loose change— & used to value them just the same. But once I tried to throw some in the bin & my heart, with an anguished shriek, snatched them back— turns out these scraps are all that's left of the best times I ever had. #mpprompt

Some people discard their leftovers immediately When they get a hankering for them, they’re gone Some people keep their leftovers too long They make themselves sick Some people know leftovers only have a short shelf life They enjoy the best parts while they can and then let go

My mummified past follows me around like a zombie, unable to rest. It wants my time, my attention, but I give it nothing. It is not what it pretends to be— made grotesque by too many attempts at resurrection. If only it could lay down in its grave & find the peace we deserve. #mpprompt

Pagan Dreams

Scribbled letters were combined to make a sigil
on sodden paper that most reluctantly burned
as she whispered words to bind and befoul.
Sleep took her with the ashes still murmurring
and wisps drifting under her silently breathing nose.
She beheld an arrowed wooden sign, atop of which sat a crow.
"Would you wound him as recompense for all he has done?"
She nodded and a hound came forth.
In her hand was a knife and she slew the beast,
which offered her no fight, nor even a whimper.
The crow stretched its black wings across the horizon
and she, able to look without blinking, watched the sun flee.
She followed the flight of the crow and finally it landed
on the shoulder of a man bound to a lonely standing stone.
She approached and saw he was fastened not by ropes,
but by his entrails, encircling him in tight circumference.
"Well?" asked the crow and she smiled and nodded. "Well."

*Lots of Irish mythology referenced here. The Morrígan was a triple goddess who often took the form of a crow. She had several run ins with Cú Chulainn (coo hull in,) son of the sun god Lugh (Loo or Lug.) During his last battle Cú Chulainn tied himself to a standing stone with his own entrails to die on his feet. No one believed him dead until a crow landed on his shoulder.

Still waiting for a stranger to give feedback.

Autumn plays its usual tricks— lulling with cosy evenings & a soundtrack of gentle rain. As if the walls between worlds have not been compromised as if ancestral ghosts don't lurk in the dark as if, when I sleep, my dreams are not seeped in all of the ancient magic buried within me. #mpprompt

Renovations

I stripped the paper from the walls today
And found the names I’d buried out of sight;
Each careful coat had kept the past at bay,
Until the cracks began to speak at night.

I took a hammer to the bolted door
And let the daylight settle on the grain;
The house had held its breath through every war,
Now even dust could learn to dance again.

I will not build a room without a seam,
Nor make a shrine of what I have outgrown;
Let crooked windows interrupt the dream
That I must turn my heart to polished stone.

Some things must fall before the walls can stand;
I draw the plans. The hammer’s in my hand.

I want to be good & kind & decent but I can't afford the renovations— something rotten in my foundations, long obscured by youth & charm but now I'm older & it's starting to show like woodworm in the floorboards. Tread carefully, the sign says— there are cracks in the structure of her. #mpprompt

Some rooms require burning renovations before walls breathe again. Old habits smolder beneath fresh paint, yesterday’s furniture blocks tomorrow’s door, and rebuilding begins when the house admits what must leave. #MPPrompt #PoetryPrompt burning renovations #poetry #PoetryCommunity

Out After Dark

A feathered boa garlands his neck,
he totters on his long way home
giddy from his first time at a club,
tonight he is out, at home he will be in.

Others are differently out after dark
the girls clacking heels, tacky hens,
bride to be, regretting kisses,
and planning to regret more.

Groups of lads sing football songs
tottering and barfing,
holding each other up,
laughing at ribald calls to the nearby girls.

Nearby a man waits by dark recessed steps,
cobbled streets here, to practiced ears,
echo the number of feet passing,
sometimes many, sometimes,
one.

Foreign Birds

The birds arrived with foreign songs.
We left them crumbs beside the gate.
They sang until the bread grew mold.
We thought they missed their home.

One learned my mother’s little cough.
One whistled through my father’s teeth.
I found them perched upon his spade.
We thought they missed their home.

Last night, a fledgling tapped the glass
and used my childhood name.

I let it in.
It knew which room was hers.

"Fire Sale" The mind opened late— liquidating weather, discarding borrowed convictions, selling certainty cheaply. Fears went first. Then the need to be understood. By closing time, regret was negotiable. Only one thing remained: the self that priced everything. #MPPrompt #PoetryPrompt #poetry
