Thank you for hosting #promptcombo @rfsmith.bsky.social My take on this week's #Apocalypse #poetry
depraved new world

forsaken riverbeds
skeletal salmon slowly
crumbling to nothing

deserts that used to be
meadows — relentless
sandstorms plaguing
few remaining cities

electricity — a fairytale
remembered under
flickering torchlight

screens that have grown
quiet for decades now
compassion had been
unlearned, traded for
something shallow

tribal cultures rule
cruelty became
the new norm
depraved new world

Dyspepsia

Ear-popping thundercrack splits
Parking metre asunder outside Head Office,
Punctuating the gravel-whine of beans
Ground and whooshed to a caustic brew that
Gurgles the day long through cranky bowel-bellied coworkers.

Subsidiary bloat spun off from Tweedledum behemoths
Insourcing the language services of a national telecoms provider.

I’ll never forget the day when vanquished
Employees were paraded through Head Office: their
Stooped, resigned, crestfallen air – as if
Yoked neck to neck in a coffle.

#promptcombo #11Lines @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social and... I think this pretty much explains itself :P My stim noises vary wildly, but they are a noise, always.
This is why I’m Freelance by S. Reeson

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition.
It is considered a spectrum condition. Stim.
You may interact with people differently.
Your favourite dolly with it’s head ripped off. Stim.

You might find bright, loud or strong overwhelming.
New situations are difficult to cope with. Stim.
It will take forever for an autism diagnosis, especially as an adult.
It’s a waste of time and money. Stim instead.

You may find this alternative way
of embracing the world helpful.
Autism has never been a mental health problem.

Nomads

Mom used to curse my gypsy blood when I took off. She always gave me a roll of coins so I would call. Once a week and she wouldn't panic, although some calls caused that anyway. But mostly they were to relate the weirdness that was my life - well the bits I could tell her at least.

A girl who escaped from the Black
Lived her life off the beaten track.
As a wild, reckless fool,
Nomadic life was so cool.
Until she was forced to go back!

@emteepoetry.bsky.social My #PromptCombo #Personified entry. This is the Personification of Death in Pandea (the world where all my cryptid creations are from) #poetry #amwriting #fantasy #death
The bards have passed its ancient name
From tongue to tongue across the years
The myth, the legend that became
The source of all our greatest fears
Whenever Grief would raise its head,
Or Sadness come to visit us
They rode, or so the stories said,
Upon the back of Mortivus.
Its face, a bleached and withered corpse,
Which wore its mane as matted cloak
The guise it chose, a spectral horse,
That rhymed with every line it spoke.
Four legs cut off before the hooves
On which it gallops through thin air,
The end of life is its to choose
If death calls, Mortivus is there.
One sight that always sparks alarm,
Its visage marks the end of days.
Beneath its scythe like centaur arms
Mortality will have its prey.

speaking stones

pebbles — some rough
some smooth and polished
they talk to me while I'm sleeping
enrich my dreams with stony
visions

every single one hand-picked
on various travels — some even
originated from volcanos
their stories intertwine with
subconsciousness' weaving

never weighing me down
instead their presence allows
me to soar — light as a feather
as thoughts sprout lithic wings
I breathe in midnight

A Walk in the Woods

A friend, they say,
Knows what you have done
And likes you anyway.
This matters, with the setting of the sun.

But my friend and I are not the same
They love me, but I do not.
I hurt their heart and own the blame.
This wakes me, makes nighttime fraught.

Trees are old and live slow lives;
They do not care what we do or say.
So I smile; for they rightly chide
My small shadows, with their green-dappled day.

Silly

I have scars you know. In the layers. Tattoos from being used like a doormat.

It was their cat you know. It was her fault. They used to leave the window open for her to get in and out. She ripped at me like I was a scratching post. Tore me jagged.

But they did care you know. They smoothed things out. Mended my wounds gently. Protected me. I shone. Then they opened the window and she came. But I wasn't ready, and this time when she walked over me she left her imprint.

They're still there you know. Those footprints. I have lost count of the times I have been sanded down and repainted, don't remember how many seasons I've seen through my window, but those tiny dents never seem to quite disappear. My scars you see?

My memories of footsteps through fresh paint.

I meant to get this to 14 lines of #blankverse. Call it a #wip? My youngest has taken lately to picking some of mommy's books of #poetry on the shelf to read for bedtime. Something about Ed Zahniser's "Confidence of Being" made him so happy. #personified #promptcombo

A review I should never give a friend
for his book of poetry without a
sincere explanation of total facts:
I read it to my son, and he loved it...
He called them each “yawns”, fell asleep halfway
through the book, pages sweet lullaby lilt...
but he loved how each yawned. Five of five stars.

Here’s an older one from the perspective of Oscar Wilde’s pen #promptcombo #Personified @emteepoetry.bsky.social
Oscar's Pen
I knew him by the quickness of his hand, laughter outrunning ink,
lines turning
before they were thought. He held me lightly then,
as if we conspired. Now I am taken up
with care, turned in the light, as though I might confess
what has left him.
I answer as ever, darkly, without hesitation,
but he no longer risks me. No sudden wit, no reckless turn, only words that arrive
already judged. Once, he trusted what we might become,
a flourish, a wound, a delight. Now he sets me down
before the ink can betray him.

In Team by S. Reeson

there is no realism in my personification
there is no redemption in this story arc
there are no lies in the paper trail either
there might be some dishonesty
in that previous statement but there
you see I tried my best to fit in not be
the I in Team that’s always been

there is a hole where the narrative should
fit seamlessly as I accept listening to them all
laughing there is nothing we have in common
and it is easier then to become the tree
the silent matriarch simply watching
when you have spent a lifetime afraid
there is always safety in not being seen

Albatross Poiesis

Knight’s-move
Thought slippage that would
Astonish André Breton:

Beak whittled into sturdy
Paperclip;

Webbed foot bloated into
Snuff pouch;

Breast plumage shaped into
Foppish muff for mariners on
Shore leave. But the

Queen’s gambit is
All mine to play:
Floating beside you without
Stir for days on end -
Gliding across swells in
Moves prompted by an
Ever-shifted lodestar.

Pulse of the voyager:
Winded up, earth-pull down -
Zigzag and tack in ship-wake.

Gut-lurch plunge into
Deep-trough gallivant,

Coming up again and again as
Lip-ride on long rollers.

Then I am
Hooked and baited,
Humiliated by the hoots of
Sailors - my wings, once fluid,
Now trail uselessly as rotted
Oars.

Bird in flight -
Bird in exile -
All Spirit
All Flesh
All Pity
All Grace.

Pied-spotted at birth,
I grow paler with each passing
Decade – with each
Wingbeat, lap-league weighted to
Rub your primordial stain clean – until

I lord it above you in
Effulgent whites of
Angelic terror.

Birds of the Steppe

I dream of solstitial light
Leaking into the room,
Animating a vintage radio set.

Dial glides, wheels through the
Crackling static.

White-noise snow-blind,
Needle on the
Analogue radiogram flits from
Station to station without
Settling on a perch:
Snatches of voice, music,
Traffic-hum poke up through the
Ocean roar of cawing,
Gurgling, cackling.

Now cresting, now troughing
Long Wave,
Needle pitches into
Whoop and wail, before it
Alights upon a pioneering
Cereal farmer in the Neolithic,
Harrowing the Anatolian plateau
Near Ankara.

Tracking Earth’s contours,
Loping beyond the horizon,
Needle twitches with excitement
As it approaches Moscow
Long before Mongol Muscovy;
As Scythians, Sarmatians drive
Stock grazing ever westwards -

Migration upon migration,
Moving between Long and
Medium Wave,

As the Puszta digs in at Budapest;
As Hilversum shears fen from heath;
As Luxembourg settles down to the
Soft, meditative coo of a flock at ease.

Needle comes to rest at
Home and Light:
Tall trees huddle close to
Open water, open grass in Norfolk -
Much like in the Rook’s
Ancient steppe homeland.

Flint-knapped
Jackdaws add their strident
Dot-dash to the Rookery’s
Aubade oratory.

Emerging into wakefulness,
I sense an informal, conversational
Quality in the recession of echoes and
Responses in the treetop colony.

They are talking to me,
Imparting secrets, no doubt.

Their Song is
Our Song.

The Moon Does Not Rise, Continues Not Rising:
(after Emily Dickinson)

The moon does not rise, continues not rising:
Yes colour of evening
Under the town, you unperceived,
to home from home is midnight.

Dawn does not increase, continues not increasing.;
Yes dry on rocks,
Not only off back of your head started,
And resided out back of your head

Your head continues waking, continually waking.
Your toes are asleep, accept the loudness yourself
see things as they actually are.

You did not know the dark before. You are blind to it. Was living, you are afraid to not know.

Millennium Mountain

They were all thirty that year;
I was younger, still catching up.
But we agreed it mattered
as Ben's chimes rang out
and the sky erupted in fireworks.

We took off
coordinated the trip
on our new mobile phones,
tapping out messages
with missing vowels,
ghostly green faces
as we sped along the road
curving around the sleeping mountain.

We climbed as the night thinned,
the peak rising ahead of us,
a dark shape waiting.
Even those carrying two
kept their pace,
determined to reach the summit
before the sun.

At the misted summit
soft and uncertain,
we stood together
and held hands for auld lang syne,
small
against the widening sky.

And we felt it
the era of darkness loosening,
the new decade opening
in a thin, bright seam
along an unseen horizon.
