Thank you for hosting #promptcombo @rfsmith.bsky.social My take on this week's #Apocalypse #poetry
depraved new world

forsaken riverbeds
skeletal salmon slowly
crumbling to nothing

deserts that used to be
meadows — relentless
sandstorms plaguing
few remaining cities

electricity — a fairytale
remembered under
flickering torchlight

screens that have grown
quiet for decades now
compassion had been
unlearned, traded for
something shallow

tribal cultures rule
cruelty became
the new norm
depraved new world

Hi Ronnie @rfsmith.bsky.social a version of a poem I posted on Substack recently. I think its not quite describing #apocalypse but I hope you feel my fear #promptcombo Thanks and have a great week.
These Days

these are the days
the end to summer
in a still garden skeins
of wild geese high above
almost touching cloud
a surprise band of rainbow
curved over rooftops

days when drought damaged trees
barely whisper in unseasonal
temperatures and wrens play
among cool crisp-leaf shrubs
these are autumn solstice
hot-air days

when we're left
to listen to ego deadly lies
scorched bluster
watch lurchers grasp anothers
sweaty palm gifting to each
stolen parts of bloodied earth
and our lives

these days

All of Earth’s surfaces are rough and dry,
with unhealed wounds that fester and degrade;
her once-bright seas are yellow-brown and still
beneath the scum of plastic, sunlight-bleached.

Even her skies are scarred by streaks of high
and soiled-white clouds that drift and give no shade,
that never rain upon her grassless hills,
that hold their acid moisture out of reach.

Somehow the planet staggers on her course
around the sun, long dead, decayed, but kept
in motion by a dark, unvital force.

A poem by Debbie Ross entitled Apocalypse Now
Stanzas 1 -4
When I was young the fear of mushroom clouds was real
old men pushing buttons ending it all
and then the Sunday School doom merchants fed me Revelations of fire and horsemen the 'earth laid bare'
I thought that wars might end us the human race destroying each other and the earth rubbled with us
And the disaster movie makers had their say with meteors wiping us out
destroying everythingStanzas 5 and 6 of a poem Apocalypse Now by Debbie Ross

thought we might live to see the sun
grow large
Finally
a red giant desiccating our planet
but now I'm not sure we'll make it that far disaster wears a human face as we melt the Doomsday ice and set the world on fire our blue green gem of a home destroyed by greed.

@rfsmith.bsky.social here is my #Apocalypse poem for your #PromptCombo call. #Poetry
Burn

You say it will burn.
Trumpets will split the sky,
and I’ll be left in the wreckage.

Well, good.
Let it burn.

Let the sky split.
Let the faithful rise
with their wagging fingers
and Sunday-best shame.

I’ll take the ash and cracked earth,
the silence after sermons,
the streets without judgment.

You call it punishment.
I call it release.
No more eyes searching for sin.
No more venomous mouths
spitting scripture,
preaching division.

The outcasts will survive.
Plant gardens in the rubble.
Dance without guilt.
Love without permission.
Stay where the flames
make light,
and freedom
makes room for truth.

Rite of Spring II –
End of History

Unforeseen
Redemption of the
Pledge broken after
Pražské jaro - the
Rite of Prague Spring.

Gen-X urbex vanguard now
Probes the freshly-breached
No Man’s Land of the Cold War;
Scouts the bohemian outposts of a
Siberia deemed vanquished in
Prenzlauer Berg and Kraków -

The End of History
Convulsed by
Haman’s Rape of Kuwait, his
Poison-tipped scuds
Primed and pointed at
The Holy Land.

As
Teens, mounted dispatchers from
Armageddon’s Badlands would
Stalk their nightmares:
Dream-censor admitting only the
Terrifying wait before the
Three-Minute Warning -
Never the firestorm, poison rains or
Unending solar eclipse of the
Aftermath.

Now they dance - in
Disused hangars, warehouses,
Husks of factories, cotton mills:
Devastation wrought not by
Bombs, but by GATT,
Knowledge economies in utero, and a
Ten-year crusade against the unions.

Now they dance -
Enacting the Rite of Spring’s
Tableaux from eighty years ago:

Roerich’s peasant smocks echoed in
Lurid, baggy fashions;
Crashing, snarling beats and drones;

MDMA-tinged bacchanalia fusing the
Tribes of Neo-Mod, Rude Boy,
Indie Girl and Crusty Juggler;

Frenetic shadows – cut adrift from
Nijinsky’s original castings;

Elders scoping the heavens with that
Lost, abstracted look – not unlike
Bez from the Happy Mondays when
Shorn of his maracas.

Ecstatic Dance-to-the-Death, but
No Chosen One propitiates the
Spirit of the Earth.

Death by Water, but not in the
Raven coils of the Rusalka,

Nor by
Ducking stool,

Nor as live offering to
Chaac in a Mayan sinkhole . . .

Intoxication: a
Lucozade-and-water-laced
Misadventure.

Bez of the Happy Mondays in his early-'90s pompt with signature maracas which, if they weren't silent, probably held his secret cache of disco biscuits! :DRoerich-designed costumes from the Nijinsky ballet version of Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps (Rite of Spring)

My second offing for #PromptCombo #The90s for @janpsolivagant.bsky.social #Poetry
Tinted/Tainted

We danced in underground clubs,
stepping over the bodies
of those who couldn't take it.

We drowned ourselves in drugs,
a fix for every feeling
a way to always fake it.

The music scene blew up,
we picked at battered guitars
convinced we’d somehow make it.

Politicians became thugs
We raised our voices even higher
just trying hard to shake it.

Love was just for mugs,
heart wrapped in armour plating,
crowds lined up to stake it.

This decade made good,
by youth we thought would last
until 2000 came to break it.

Morning

The sun lifts its gaze,
a soft gold unfurling.
Light gathers slowly,
thick as honey in the clouds,
bruising them with violet.

Dew wakes on the grass.
Birds stir in silhouetted trees,
rising to bathe
in the filtering rays,
mapping out the day ahead
in their lines.

Nothing rushes.
The world expands by degrees,
each new shade a declaration
that the dark has loosened its grip,
the widening light
a reminder:
the day is beginning
whether you’re ready or not.

For #Promptcombo #Era and @rfsmith.bsky.social:
On Trend

In Bus Station, now renamed, Transport Interchange
crazies herd, or stud on Friday night,

past disguised as fresh and new.
Filly's Seventies platform throwback

high heels whipcrack and totter
past and shoutback,

"Can't get enough!", to the stallions.
Hormones on an after school

high josh one another into minor
crimes their pot bellies

will chuckle at when they're pastured.
Big yellow hi viz "club bouncer"

jackets tap their ear phones
and watch the younger

good spirits rise, ready to corral a stampede.
A thin bright yellow hi viz jacket

pushes a blue plastic hygiene cart
whose white wheels clop on tiles

recall wooden clogs on sodden cobbles.
A crazy talks to himself

as he trots by, his eyes elsewhere
and then I see the leads

from the buds in his ears.
Young stud tucks his blue boxers

into his jeans waist below
his haunches, a US prison trend,

and old fashion now.
Yoga panted fillies giggle

at his shorts, as they, too
will blush at fashions sworn by

in their galloped youth.
And older some afford pasture,

others to the knacker's yard,
and clothes no longer second hand,

or charity but sold as "vintage".

Annus mirabilis:
Time and matter -
Light and space -
Reshaped by an
Obscure clerk from Bern.

In an
English market town, a
Five-year-old girl is blessed with
Vocation when she sees a
Meteor shoot across the sky.

Later she recalls the
Summer of her eighth birthday:
Skies aglow across Europe and Asia;
Pictures taken in Scotland at
Midnight without bulbs -

Light passing through
Frozen specks formed in the
Dust-billowed aftermath of that
Blue-glint airburst over Siberia.

Impact with midsized
Thermonuclear yield -

Pinprick cribbed from the
Plasma alchemy
She now sees at work in the
Stellar core of our
Sun.

@rfsmith.bsky.social here is my offering for your excellent #Era #PromptCombo callout. #Poetry
Millennium Mountain

They were all thirty that year;
I was younger, still catching up.
But we agreed it mattered
as Ben's chimes rang out
and the sky erupted in fireworks.

We took off
coordinated the trip
on our new mobile phones,
tapping out messages
with missing vowels,
ghostly green faces
as we sped along the road
curving around the sleeping mountain.

We climbed as the night thinned,
the peak rising ahead of us,
a dark shape waiting.
Even those carrying two
kept their pace,
determined to reach the summit
before the sun.

At the misted summit
soft and uncertain,
we stood together
and held hands for auld lang syne,
small
against the widening sky.

And we felt it
the era of darkness loosening,
the new decade opening
in a thin, bright seam
along an unseen horizon.
