Ghost in Feathers

The barn walls drink the last of the light.
Shadows bloom like bruises across the beams.
The swallows sleep in cloistered hush;
the oxblood tractor ticks,
a cooling beast slain at sunset.

Moths rise, dust-winged,
erratically searching
for the memory of light.
Spiders unfurl their wire legs,
threading tremors through webs.
Bats spill from broken gables,
their flight a soft percussion
through the dark.

The barn's hushed breath is silenced.
But the night's chorus is not complete.
One nocturnal spectre lingers.
Watching.
Seeing all.

Talons unfurl, rusted hooks sear
through feathers pale as bone.
She ends her vigil with a haunted cry,
and the scuttling things below
wonder if they are the who she calls for.

There is no fanfare, only death on wing.
Silent, surgical, inevitable.
Rending flesh, she claims her prize,
then slips between the rafters,
folding into their oaken skin.

Though night wanes, she remains:
perched, unmoving, unblinking.
Waiting.
A ghost in feathers.

#AmpersandAfterDark #prompt @madp03t.bsky.social I apologise to anyone that reads this.
His wife said he had a strange nose,
like thirteen ugly feet of garden hose,
she was lately on a binge of fibre,
making it hard to stand long beside her,
but when her arse did offend,
his wonderful nose he'd extend,
to take pleasure in the unsoiled air,
far away from her wind battered chair,
at night she'd drag him by the nose to bed,
make him dress up like her old boyfriend Fred,
so sometimes he'd sniff up a spider,
and giggling, expel it inside her!

#BedroomEyesPrompt #BedroomEyes #October #halloween @matthew-ds9.bsky.social bsky.social @bedroomeyespoet.bsky.social @ctrlaltdltffs.bsky.social You can blame Beth for this 😄
The wretched eye stared bloodshot through a hole in the wall.
It had always been there, even though the wall had not.
No one had ever been able to find the other side of the wall.
No one who saw the eye had ever tried, and those that hadn't, and had searched found only a white blankness that writhed in their mind.
In the room that the eye observed was a table, triangular in shape. On it rested a pale glove and a curved knife.
The old man and old lady who owned the house that rested above the eye sometimes brought guests to the room, ushering them in without speaking.
Each guest would find themself regarded. Each would put on the white glovc and take the knife. Each one would walk to the eye and hold the blade against its dark shimmering pupil.
The old man and old lady would then close the door and wait.
Finally would come a wet knocking and, unlocking the door the guest would stumble out, red gloved hand over empty socket.
The old lady would remove one of her white gloves and place it on the table. The old man would life the knife, wipe it with a monogrammed hankerchief and lay it again next to the glove.
The eye, in darkness, would blink when the door closed.
And the guest would in time find a stranger and whisper to them complusions of this place.

Young Professional

You were the first man to own,
a Camera Phone
in parts here, there or around.
I know this as you pronounced it often,
proudly awarding those words
the status of proper nouns.
A week or two later you met
a girl in a dim night club,
the same model as you,
and you held up your phones together,
both snapping, then swapping
recursive images, flashing publicly.
She gave you the means
to take a long look at yourself,
and you joyfully gazed.

When I told you a year later
that a sporting reality show was
dull in its manufacture
you did not remove your eyes from the screen
as you retorted that at least
the players were not stacking shelves
for a living.
It did not strike me as an uneasy thought
for you, nor a new one.

On the surface you were delighted
when you met her,
the woman into whose family
you would marry.
I never had cause to question this,
as your words were certainly unrehearsed.
"Lads, I'm dating a solicitor."
You had a new phone by then, an upgrade.

Dawn Study

As inky blackness breaks,
gives way, fades grey, to dawn,
I sit on the garden bench
still and chill,
watching cigarette smoke
coil itself against the sky,
trying to name, to frame,
its cold colours.

I could call it blue.
That would do.
It would be true.
Yet blue won't hold
the whole fold of it,
won't catch the rich pitch
of that deep sweep,
that vibrant expanse
drawn and gone across the heavens.

And now it shifts, drifts again.
What colour is this?
Blue, yes,
but blue alone cannot own
every hue
in this delicate, gold-souled,
light-rolled blanket overhead,
this fabric of morning
threaded with silver,
with butterscotch,
with hints that resist
the insistence of names.

Again it changes.
The smoke melts away.
The shadows resign.
The sun has risen,
and the sky,
after all its layered displays,
its veils and trails,
its subtle disguises,
is finally,
simply,
blue.

it's unfair
how one moment
you can be just fine
and the next you feel like
you've been shot in the chest with a cannon
another way the invisible monsters torment
your chest is freezing yet it's burning
a sickening glow slowly spreads
suddenly sadness smacks into you
(why me, what did I do?)
and you fear you're finished
for no goddamn reason at all
it's so unfair

Fake Fur

She wore fur, fake of course.
As were her nails and the pretence
that boredom could be confused
with sleepy contentment.

Her husband cocked his head
and she nodded, placing her hand
over his on the dark stick knob
as they pulled off, engine throbbing.

Perhaps this would be another failure
and she would remain empty,
unfulfilled in this land, this horn of plenty
but as they eased into the car park,
she found in herself a dogged determination.

Winged Him

The shot, a crack, opened another
in the darting figure above,
"only winged him" groused the gunman,
reloading for a second attempt,
his beaked nose wrinkling in reproach,
"I'll get the next one, I feel it in my bones,"
he continued, his booming voice hollow
to my ears, an ancient raptorial cruelty
evinced across a face that although now chubbed
with age and the rich eating that comes with standing
was still fierce of bred hawkish aspect.
I thought of the bloated Henry,
bound to earth by ulcered leg,
and his sugar parties
where the nobles ate sculptures of confected swan,
arranged for tasteful delectation in cygnet rings
and their teeth slowly rotted.
As my acquaintance blasted the skies once more,
I watched silently as the bird righted itself and soared.

The Last Sky

Pale peach tendrils
reach out across the denim horizon.
A new day starting
despite the weight
of indigo laden clouds.

I could not stop it.
I would freeze this moment.
Spend forever with you within
the faded mint walls
of this medical mausoleum.
I couldn’t.

The sun continued rising,
bright amber matches glint
in the windows opposite.
Their flames are cold.
I share tears with the sky
but we cannot dout
the bitter light.

The day still comes.
And you still go.

#BedroomEyesPrompt #BedroomEyes #October #halloween @matthew-ds9.bsky.social @bedroomeyespoet.bsky.social Fair warning, I only held back a little, this is a truly foul halloween tale.
At the centre of it all sat a great fat toad, seeping a noisome slime from the scabrous warts that covered its decaying skin.
They came every twoyear, seeking inward, and finding the corpulent beast squatting where they could not lift their eyes to look.
And disrobing, they in their nakedness writhed on the toad's weeping blistered welts and bathed in its moist excrescences until their very skin began to slough and tear.
Ripping, clawing their skin until they held it like rough dripping sheets of vellum they would splay it over the toad, until every inch of the monster was covered, and then they would stand, raw wet creatures of muscle and bone, and watch as the toad, bound by human hide would wither and diminish, slurping and squelching and cracking until all that remained was a haggard and stained figure of a wretched man.
They would pull then the flesh from this loathsome doppelganger and then set upon the pitiable creature reveale beneath, cleaving, splitting and devouring it in their frenzy of detestation.
Sleep would fall over them as they gnawed the last of the meat from squeaking bone.
Upon the morn they would rise and retrieve their discarded skin, donning that soiled humanity slowly, relief at the abomination's vanquishing bringing sombre reverence.
And they would leave and wait for the toad to return.

If you see this, post a vampire that isn't Dracula. Can't resist a second go.
Willem Dafoe playing Max Shreck in Shadow of the Vampire. Shreck played "not-Dracula" Orlok in Nosferatu, and Shadow of the Vampire tells the story of how that film was made, with the difference that Shreck is portrayed as a real vampire hired to make things more authentic.

The sky is crowded,
satellites orbiting egos,

Easing awake he feels a terrier cuddle in against his back.
Reaching down to pet soft fur he is welcomed with warm licks until he stands.
Excited the dog, a wag, runs down the hall wanting to be chased and caught.
Not one to say "no" he runs, careful as she is small and turns back to him often.

I made it my business

Out After Dark

A feathered boa garlands his neck,
he totters on his long way home
giddy from his first time at a club,
tonight he is out, at home he will be in.

Others are differently out after dark
the girls clacking heels, tacky hens,
bride to be, regretting kisses,
and planning to regret more.

Groups of lads sing football songs
tottering and barfing,
holding each other up,
laughing at ribald calls to the nearby girls.

Nearby a man waits by dark recessed steps,
cobbled streets here, to practiced ears,
echo the number of feet passing,
sometimes many, sometimes,
one.

Form Fitting

Aesthetically displeased I ignored the strictures of the form,
Continuing in my pioneering ways I wrote beyond the norm,
Reaching the masses was my goal and one I'd achieve quite soon
Odes to me, not poetry. I scribed my wonderous gift in every room,
Satisfied I sat with pen, and verse I then redefined,
Soon the world would know that poetry is solely mine,
Delighted by my stanzas I dispensed with childish metre,
Incontrovertibly, my words would find the laureate, and then unseat her,
Caesar of sonnet, my name would ring out, in every home so lettered
Keenly felt the disgraceful affront, when they said I was easily bettered.

Beaks

The Battle of Little Beak Horn
was not an engagement
in the war Australia lost against emus.

A duck who lies through its beak
is called a base canard.

Rictal bristles are stiff feathers
around the base of the beak,
not to be confused with the all too human
response to an oncoming colonoscopy.

Great Cthulhu sleeps in sunken R'lyeh.
gently snoring through his bill.
It is one we will all pay when he wakes,
but these aeons are too strange,
even for a Great Old One.

Beak trimming is extremely painful
and is of course carried out routinely
in intensely farmed poultry.
Even a whimsical poem about
beaks must bear witness to our
cruelty.

The sodden sunflowers collapse into a reeking mulch
black brown grass wilts in clumped feathered cysts
in the centre of the garden sits a foetid pustule,
a greenly veined blighted eye, throbbing spitting, seething and oozing.

They have erupted all over what was once healthy,
ghost and machine,
united again in sorry weltschmerz,
tiny livid corpuscules litter her face,
and she knows like everything else she is rotting.

It came from above they said,
but not like in the the old films,
more like from the top,
a head cold that caught on,
greased palms shaking in venal delight.

Ministers in pulpits and parliaments,
infected, tend to forget their flocks,
spewing their spiteful vomit at those
fleeing death in other lands.
After all, this rot is brown in colour.

And the grossly diseased flaccid men
inoculated in their soaring towers,
sky houses topped with gilded glass,
count all their blessings
and everything else,
but find that they are not yet
enough.

For Crying Out Loud

A scuffed knee,
until he was too grown up.
Years later he cries at a film,
but not at funerals,
and is embarassed.

Decades trundle,
he must lie in the muck
or he'll be crushed.

A birthday comes,
and he is regarded by
that melancholy tumour
depression,
the card arriving
handwritten,
self addressed.

Pills are sought and taken
and he is surprised to
burst into tears in work
at a cheerful "hello."
Time to hide, again.

He is older now
and cannot blame fate
for the unkindness of others.
He finds his purpose taken
from him and comes apart
in solitary broken sobs.

I Was Never

I was never an alcoholic,
but I drank every weekend,
it was the done thing,
for most of my countrymen.

I was never an alcoholic,
but god I loved geting pissed,
now I look back regretful,
at all the life I missed.

I was never an alcoholic,
the same can't be said for driver Steve,
who emptied his guts upon the ground
twelve steps from his bloodied sleeve.
Lucky for him he's still around,
but would his life have mattered
if he had died upon the road
where most of him was splattered?

I was never an alcoholic,
and the hangovers now are hateful,
I barely touch a drop these days,
for that I'm fucking grateful.

Tennessee says child rapists deserve to die. Now it prepares to execute one of their victims
At 18, Christa Pike was sentenced to death for murder. What if the jury knew she had suffered years of sexual abuse as a child?

Final Fantasy

I can't think of the word squall without thinking of a game,
from a time when I was right on the edge between growing up and growing old,
this reader now moving to the right of the family photo frame,
I can't think of the word squall without thinking of a game,
expecting enchantment I was shabbily bored in the main,
clumsy ejaculations in its callow writing now inspiring only a jaded grey cold,
I can't think of the word squall without thinking of a game
from a time when I was right on the edge between growing up and growing old.
