There is no value to it. A bunch of media owners want to demonstrate they are part of the in-group, not to Trump, but to their employees and other insecure in-group wannabes. The media continues to be by and for Matt Yglesias and Megan McArdle.

look, i think these people should just be honest and say that their kids are too dumb and lazy for their socioeconomic status to self replicate so they want to shrink the talent pool, (which wont work because it will also shrink the demand for talent)

BREAKING NEWS KOSA failed to pass in the US Senate (thanks to Paul, R.), but remember this was the FOURTH attempt from American politicians to get it passed. Expect another attempt in the next term; stay vigilant, and do not let the USA adopt ID-collecting laws such as the SCREEN Act & KOSA.

always enjoy a jab at Catherine Liu, whose book about the PMC is straight up trash
The basic argument of the book is that wokeness is a means of elite legitimation and a means of professional advancement in particular kinds of intra-elite competitions. Borrowing a phrase from the blogger Matt Yglesias, it argues that we have just gone through a ‘Great Awokening.’ The story goes like this: new educational opportunities generated elite overproduction (too many elites); this has limited opportunities for advancement for elites (more elites relative to elite occupational positions), which created the incentive to ‘go woke’ (presumably mainly for women and elites of colour) to edge out others in elite professional fields. Is this wokeness stuff all merely liberal virtue-hoarding and PMC politics as art professor Catherine Liu or geographer Matt Huber would also lead us to believe? Adopting this view misses fundamental bottom-up dynamics in the class struggles of the last two decades, simplifying that history far beyond caricature.

Seattleites are most concerned about traffic safety because we all experience it regularly: narrowly missing getting hit while walking in a crosswalk, seeing people using center turn lanes as their personal speedway, etc. Most people also know someone who has died or been seriously injured:
Info graphic showing most people will know 6 people who die in a car crash and 28 who have major injuries

Based on what they found out in those investigations, which took forever thanks to witness intimidation etc, The DOL put in a bunch of anti-slavery provisions for H2A farm workers in 2024. And Trump cancelled back in June 2025. Who's in power absolutely does matter.

The Yuddite/rationalist primary defense mechanism is spurting out a big ink-cloud of thesaurus and number-laden complete nonsense, and then demanding that you waste your time "debating" them over it. The good news is that this trick is easily defeated by simply refusing to play the Debate Me game.

I'd even argue that a lot of his "good" stuff was bad. The idea of government by lawsuit, essentially putting citizen vs government has crippled a lot of hope for a robust federal administrative state that can actual do the things we need to do.

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

just like the Fugitive Slave Act, conservatives demand that they can impose their evil systems upon liberal states, democracy be damned, but if liberal states so much as offer a mild disincentive for evil to make conservative state maybe Suck Less then it's unconstitutional tyrannical overreach

One of my favorite abandoned spots, the Phillipsburg Mall in NJ opened in 1989 and closed in 2020. It sat in limbo until it was demolished in 2024. I've photographed a lot of dead/dying malls; the fact that this one still had power made it eerily beautiful. More at www.abandonedamerica.us/dead-malls
