@pierrenovellie.bsky.social My Shinkansen was an hour late due to fires near the line and when I got off I was greeted by two separate TV news crews interviewing passengers about what it was like to be on a late train.

watching The Man Who Fell to Earth, always thought this was a weird choice of tagline but I guess it worked
original theatrical poster for The Man Who Fell to Earth - circular colour image of a verdant river valley with Bowie and a thin white outline of a triangle superimposed onto it set against a black backdrop, title to the left of this image, company credits below - with tagline added by me in the negative space at the top of the image 'you'll see Rip Torn's dick and pubes!'

I had no idea that the phrase “Back to the old drawing board” comes from this Peter Arno cartoon from March 1st 1941’s New Yorker. It’s rather splendid to be able to date the birth of what would become part of everyday speech with such precision.

I do love 'House and Garden'.
Help! My 15-year-old son wants to paint his bedroom black. I've said no, several times, because currently his bedroom is papered in Morris & Co Willow Bough, with matching blinds (the aim was to give him something that would serve through adolescence to adulthood) - but he keeps coming back to it, and it inevitably descends into an argument. He's passionate about skateboarding and says William Morris is 'not a match for his aesthetic. Nor, he tells me, is the set of John James Audubon ornithological prints that were a Christening present from his grandparents, or even a Howard chair. The armchair and the prints, however, can be relocated to another room. The black is trickier, and I suppose my concerns are two-fold. Firstly, in terms of my aesthetic, I love the Willow Bough, and I'm simultaneously not thrilled about having a black room in the house. It's so dark, and I suspect it would open the floodgates to hideous accessories (he wants a giant beanbag.)
Secondly, I'm rather hoping that this is just a phase, but that raises the possibility that if I did allow the black then in 18 months' time he could
regret it. Is this likely? And if so, do I just hold out for a bit longer until the desire has passed?
Perhaps I can bribe him with something else? Or, is there a way through via some sort of decorating compromise?

REMEMBER The guidance coming into effect today doesn't dictate what you're allowed to do as an individual. It for service providers and business owners. Do not cower in fear, do not reduce yourself, do not isolate, that is one of the intended effects.
Photo taken at a protest, he background is tall old buildings of a city centre, a lightskined hand is holding a sign with a trans flag painted on it that says "fuck your "respect and clarity""

Social media post by Sam Shopp captioned about their “most prized possession” — a used copy of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë defaced so that every mention of “Jane” is crossed out and replaced with “Spiderman” or “Spidey.” The left image shows the book’s cover, a Barnes & Noble Classics edition, with the title altered to read “SPIDER-MAN” and a Spider-Man sticker placed over the original cover artwork. The right image shows an interior page (the deathbed scene with Helen) where “Jane” has been handwritten over with “Spidey” throughout

A sweet translator’s note on Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey.
When I was eight years old, my primary school put on a production of a (much-shortened) Odyssey, complete with cos-tumes, song, and dance. The play starred the cute troublemaker in my class as Odysseus, the headmaster of the school as Polyphemus (the one-eyed monster outwitted by his tiny opponents), and me in pigtails as the goddess Athena.
It was a turning point in my life. I was enthralled by the production, not only because we could pretend to gouge out the headmaster's eye (thrilling though that was), or just because I was cast to play a goddess (ditto), but because of the story and the atmosphere it evoked: a world of magic and adventure, of diverse cultures (both human and nonhuman, welcoming and murderous, foreign and familiar), and of an individual's struggle to survive and return home. After this experience, I was inspired to read as many Greek myths as I could find, including versions of The Odyssey itself. I went on to learn Latin and Greek, to read classics at Oxford, and to become a professional classicist. Over the decades since my eight-year-old performance, The Odyssey has always been with me.

V much enjoyed this passage from Hisham Matar’s ‘My Friends’ which reminded me of a long and happy youth spent just walking into stuff with enough confidence that nobody ever stopped me.
I discovered that I could
sneak into plays and concerts. I would put on a shirt, go into the bar during the interval, making sure I had a book in my pocket. When the bell rang for the third time, I marched up with the others, pretending to be immersed in the book I was reading. And, as people generally dislike interrupting a man reading, I would sleepwalk into the theatre. Once inside, I would stand lingering, mesmerized by the book in hand, facing the page determinedly, until, just as everyone had taken their seats and the lights had gone down, I would look up, feigning a slight surprise and, with the gently embarrassed smile of the elderly, des-
cend into the nearest empty chair. I saw the second half of many things this way. In plays I felt like an intruder, that everyone sitting beside me, their faces lit by the stage, knew more than I could about the story. This was not the case with chamber music, as the second half of a performance was of one or several complete pieces. No preparation was required. And, because I could not choose what to listen to and what to avoid, this clandestine operation earned me a broad musical education.
