The funniest/saddest reaction to this amazing article has been people going "wait, Stellaris has WRITERS?" Yes folks, if a game has words... someone probably got paid to write them... even if that game isn't an RPG or a visual novel...

My sense is that, while games media’s done a little better at hiring more diversely in the years since Keza wrote this article, we’ve failed badly at systemically supporting women in the face of a hostile audience. And that systemic support is only *less* likely to arise as media pillars crumble.

Good lord, what a confusing decision. To use the nearly 30-year-old identity of a specific studio like paint to spruce up a whole, well, division. Not enough respect for who made what in this medium.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

I love that no matter how smugly competent you get at Sunless Sea you still, every so often, allow yourself to be tempted too far out; find yourself feathering the ship-lamp to try and fend off both fuel-death and madness for that last minute it’ll take to reach port. One of my favorite and most effective design patterns is "tell the player exactly what you're gonna do to them, then do it." You can be SIGNIFICANTLY meaner to the player if you simply tell them ahead of time that that's exactly what you'll be doing, and also the suspense of the warning is a delight

Final two cents on the PMG x Kotick story: It is paramount that you support the journalism you want to see in the world. Outlets like PMG continue to raise the bar, BUT if you want even more of that probing journalism you have to give reporters the runway and financial backing to produce it.

A lot of journalists want to try and leave the games industry a better place than they found it, and find certain forces pushing against them. But PMG really exemplifies that mindset. I'm so impressed that they let nothing stop them. The doggedness of it!

Okay, so you’re making Obsidian a Bethesda studio. Can we consolidate Megadeth and Metallica? What if we fold Wordsworth and Coleridge under a shared name going forward, since they produced roughly comparable works. It’s not cultural obscenity, it’s streamlining.

I do wonder whether AAA productions have reached a budget level where straightforward hack 'n' slash action games no longer make sense. Maybe 18 months is the optimum amount of creative time you can spend on an idea of that kind. Beyond that you're building crenelations for a chocolate cake.
