The she-wolf who nurtured Romulus and Remus, depicted in mosaic form as a maniacal black dog with sharp teeth and white eyes.

Publishers and Editors! I'm taking subs for Vol. 3 of the award-nominated "Best Weird Fiction of the Year" til end of the year. Writers! You'll get a chance to submit your 2026 stories in January. bestspecfic(at)gmail.com

Esteemed Editors and Publishers,

I am now taking submissions of original 2026 short fiction projects — magazines, anthologies, single-author collections — for consideration in The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 3. (Publishing Sept. 2027). Vol. 1 is a World fantasy Award Finalist.

I am seeking material first published this year, in 2026. To be clear, only weird fiction FIRST published in 2026 is eligible for inclusion in this volume. I will accept translated work as long as the first English-language publication was 2026.

Stories should be between 500 and 17,499 words. Audio only stories are also ineligible, unless they also appeared as text.

Publishers and editors are encouraged to send electronic or digital copies, via the email address below. (I am not accepting hard copy submissions.) ePubs are preferred, but I will also accept text files (Word), Mobi, or PDF. Please do not cherry-pick selections. Send the entire book, journal, or magazine to:

bestspecfic@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and kind consideration.

Warm Wishes,

Michael

Interested in late medieval witches? It's not too late to join sessions on the topic at the IMC2027, co-organised by a @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social PhD student, Ana Inés Aldazabal.
Although the witch-hunt reached its peak in the early modern era, it was during the medieval period that the foundations were laid for the stereotype that would characterise witch trial records. In late medieval Europe, the idea emerged that an organised group of individuals led by the Devil sought to destroy the Christian community through maleficia. By allegedly attacking livestock, poisoning populations, spreading disease, and destroying crops, witches came to be perceived both as a collective threat and as a counter-community: an imagined parallel society with its own cult and culture, constructed as a negative reflection of Christendom. As witchcraft beliefs took hold, accusations and persecution became a means of reaffirming social boundaries. However, they could also have deeply disruptive effects on community life.

For this panel, we welcome proposals dealing with witchcraft in relation to communities during the Middle Ages. We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplines (art history, history, law, literature, religious studies, etc.) and contributions that foster interdisciplinary dialogue from researchers at any stage of their career

Sweet, strange uncitizens: ONCE I WAS MADE OF EARTH is here, an epic fantasy that's been ratling in my brain for years now and that I'm putting out into the world serially outside of the capitalist publishing apparatus. Share, and read, and comment. archiveofourown.org/works/91618061
The painting "The Moment" by James Warden, with the text "Once I Was Made of Earth" on it by Rivers Solomon. The painting is in the romantic style, quite dramatic and dark in tone if not colour, with a horse rearing with fear in its eyes as a snake launches to bite it, against a back drop of pink and blue mountains.

Goya rightly gets a lot of love for his Black Paintings, this slightly earlier work is another of my faves, The Burial of the Sardine (1812–1819). Love how it grows increasingly sinister the more details you pick out, the masked revellers surrounding the grinning 'King of the Carnival'...
The title is posthumous, referring to the culminating event, Entierro de la Sardina, of a three-day carnival in Madrid ending on Ash Wednesday. Masked and disguised revellers are seen dancing their way to the banks of the Manzanares, where a ceremonial sardine will be buried. Goya does not illustrate the fish in the painting, nor the large doll made of straw, called a pelele, from which it hung; the centrepiece is the darkly grinning "King of the Carnival".Mask detail. The painting is certainly a tribute to the common people, depicting an exuberant crowd carousing on the first day of Lent while other Spanish Catholics worship at church. Yet the celebration takes on a sinister aspect due to the many masked and blank faces.

Happy cover reveal day for LONESOME AND FESTERING by @ericraglin1992.bsky.social (me)! @louceph.com did a spectacular job with the art, and @alandistro.bsky.social nailed the typography. You CAN judge the book by this cover. See preorder and review copy details in the posts below. 👇
The cover illustration shows a bunch of men in suits packed into a pantry. Most are slumped over or facing the walls, but one looks up ghoulishly at the viewer and the bare bulb hanging above.A widower reaches his violent breaking point while giving a tour of a haunted coral reef. A student pays off his lunch debt by toiling in the endless, monster-infested caverns beneath his school. An old woman discovers her fate is grotesquely connected to the endangered toads she’s trying to save. A lapsed member of a queer motorcycle gang returns to rekindle a romance, commit arson, and summon Satan.

Lonesome and Festering is Eric Raglin’s latest horror and Weird fiction collection for sickos, featuring stories about fighting for love, surviving dystopia, and becoming your worst self under capitalism and fascism.
