It's Friday Murder time. This week is about abortion and the law and once more asks the question "when is a murder not a murder?" In 1828, a major piece of legislation combined a load of different laws around interpersonal violence. It was called the Offences Against the Person Act 1828

Elizabeth did well for herself. She worked in royal service, as lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Kent. She knew baby Princess Victoria and her older sister, Princess Feodora. She was in their service at Sidmouth in January 1820, when the Duke of Kent died.

Elizabeth Eliza Jones married Thomas Keyse that year. She was a gentry girl, he was a wealthy merchant. They lived in the extremely fancy Wyer Hall in Edmonton. But Thomas was a wrong'un. Along with twelve others, he opened a fake bank. And embezzled ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS.

I lost my mum young-ish (I was 31) and found my friends all terrified of the inevitability of this kind of grief, pulling away as though death was contagious. My best support was a friend who lost her dad in her teens and came to me with open arms.

Another fascinating day at the British Crime Historians symposium, but the highlight was undoubtedly @louisebrangan.bsky.social's keynote on memories of the Magdalene laundries. Such a nuanced and sensitive exploration of how the laundries have been remembered and misremembered through time.
