I’m guest editing the next issue of Agita; send me your weirdest <1000 word stories about weird art. Authors from marginalized backgrounds encouraged and prioritized. No AI bullshit. The weirder the better. agitamag.com/submissions/
Issue 3: Ekphrasis
Between October 17 and November 17, guest editor Zachary Gillan will accept submissions of weird flash fiction that features ekphrasis.
Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art.
Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it.
We want stories that live at the intersection of the two. Pieces that emphasize the eerie power of weird art, whether fully ekphrastic or embedded within a traditional narrative. How does the weird seep in as reality is doubly estranged from these two layers of representation? Cursed paintings, uncanny statues, haunted mezzotints-send us your stories of weird art.

If you're a member of the HWA or were considering joining, take the time to read this. It's always about money with this organization. I choose to vote with my wallet, and have refunded my ticket to attend StokerCon 2027.

There are amazing people in the org, folks who care strongly about its success, and I admire their passion; however, there are some in the org who resort to bullying to protect said org, and in this case, to get what they want. I cannot and will not condone bullying tactics. I've been at the receiving end. It's not fun. I commend Virginia Scarre and KJ Brantley for speaking out about this and for not allowing it to be swept under the rug.

Horror writers deserve better.

Once I got diagnosed & medicated for ADHD, I wanted to do all the long, drawn out things I couldn’t before. Balthasar’s 4 part trilogy was at the top of that list. A year, 16 volumes, 7,381 pages, ~3.5-4 million words later, I’ve finished what I thought I’d never do. And it was worth every word.

What did Split Lip read over the summer? THE CELLAR BELOW THE CELLAR by Ivy Grimes. A playfully dark folk horror inspired by the fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful" and the mythology around Frau Perchta, set under the blazing sky of endless auroras. Recommended by Sasha Brown, flash fiction reader.

Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City (1945) is an essential work of antifascism. Shot in still-smoking ruins, released when Mussolini’s corpse was barely cold, a powerhouse immediacy and urgency as to essentially be a rehearsed docudrama. A definitive justification of neorealism as a film language.

Andor is honestly better written than most (or all) of Star Wars. An incredibly competent political thriller written by Tony Gilroy (Bourne movies) and Beau Willimon (House of Cards.) The S1 prison break sequence is probably my favorite, but "Who Else Knows" is masterfully tense.

One of my favourite paintings, 'A Seated Woman Looking at a Child Through a Window', a ghostly 17th century work by the enigmatic Jacobus Vrel. Next to nothing is known about the artist, did he even exist? More than enough room for a Schalcken the Painter style BBC Ghost Story, I would've thought..!
A woman of indefinable age, seen from behind, leans against a window where a child’s face stealthily appears in the half-darkness. She seems to be trying to communicate with the little girl by placing her hand on the windowpane.

Ted Chiang on AI: www.theatlantic.com/philosophy/2...
Being open to the possibility that LLMs are conscious is the same as being open to the possibility that Microsoft Word is conscious, or, more precisely, that multiple distinct consciousnesses are dormant in every Word document containing a conversational transcript, and that they are awakened every time the document is loaded. Should you consider the possibility that every time you open a Word document you are bringing multiple conscious interlocutors into existence, and every time you close one you snuff their existence out? No. Contemplating that scenario is not a good use of your time. Even if the Microsoft Office team employed a philosopher who said you shouldn’t be so certain, because consciousness is not well understood, that would not be sufficient reason for you to take this idea seriously. We don’t need to fully understand the nature of consciousness to definitively say that certain things are not conscious, and conversational transcripts fall in that category.
