If it is illegal in most countries for someone without proper certification giving medical advice, how do companies get away with posting AI videos of “doctors” and “medical professionals” (who don’t actually exist) to push false health narratives and the need for unregulated health products?

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

I've seen everyone sharing that US Dialect Quiz so I decided to make my own, much crappier, CANADIAN DIALECT QUIZ to guess where in Canada you're from
A flow chart I have created with multiple questions and the answers determine where you're from.

Question 1 is do you call it a hydro bill (which then branches down to ON, QC, BC, MB) or an electric bill (which then branches down to SK, AB, NS, NB, PEI, NL)

Question 2 is do you call it a cabin (BC, MB, AB, SK) cottage (ON and atlantic) camp (northern Ontario) chalet (QC) or bungalow (Cape Breton)

To delineate BC from MB: do you call it dinner or supper

To delineate southern Ontario rural or big city: have you heard of a stag & doe

To delineate SK from AB: do you call a hoodie a bunnyhug

And finally to delineate NL from the other atlantic provinces: whaddayat? (Correct answer: dis is it b'y)

14 hours later and my mentions are still full of angry treatises about badly behaved cyclists. Bike lanes are not a reward for good cyclist behavior! They are infrastructure proven to make cities safer for ALL ROAD USERS. Whatever way cyclists have wronged you is irrelevant to the discussion!

My middle grade kiddo has been crocheting and she named her creations after characters in the book. She made a beautiful sloth & named it after a character with a facial birthmark b/c the sloth had a two-toned face and named her cockatiel after a character who loves punk rock. Haven't read the TO bike lane decision yet, but this seems bad. The government always had some power to violate rights under Section 1 but they had to make the case as to *why*. Now, it seems like "Because we think good things might happen, despite all evidence to the contrary" is good enough?

"Since 2018, when Premier Doug Ford was elected, the costs [for emergency forest firefighting} have only once been less than budgeted." #OnPoli
“We’d never underfund our firefighters. Never, ever, ever,” Mr. Ford said earlier this month as 150 fire crews battled 180 wildfires in Ontario, forcing many communities to evacuate.

The problem is, coming up with the money after fires are burning is playing catchup, addressing a problem when it has literally become a raging inferno, by which point there is often a scramble for personnel and resources.

There will always be wildfires. The question is, is it better to invest in preparing for them to minimize the damage they cause or scramble to fight them when they are already raging? The answer is obvious.
