Bus drivers, ride hail & taxi drivers, microtransit drivers: life as a nondriver wouldn't be possible without them, and it's important these are living wage jobs with security and benefits. That's why I was honored today to accept an award from the Driver's Union today... #WeekWithoutDriving

Our class pencil sharpener stopped working after only three weeks. The kids know that the entire class budget has already been spent on photocopy paper, pencils, markers, duotangs, notebooks, tissues, and bandaids. They are on a mission!! Wish us luck. 🍀

Talking about the word “reconciliation” with my students today: Kid: “So… people stole the land and then said sorry with some land knowledge-mant but they didn’t actually give the land back? ‘Cuz when I took A’s squishy you made me say sorry AND give it back.”

So far I've seen 2 of 4 leading mayor candidates make *personal* statements about their participation in a Truth and Reconciliation Day event. Additionally, our current mayor used a variation of the corporate message shared by the city and its departments.

Ottawa walking tours show history hidden in plain sight on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Thousands of people walk past the buildings in Ottawa’s downtown and along Sparks Street every day, often unaware of the history held within their walls, but a walking tour in Centretown is hoping to change that.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the children who never returned from residential schools and stand with the Survivors. True reconciliation is an active responsibility that begins with listening and committing to meaningful change.

People should know City is walking into an infrastructure crisis as years of underfunding has led to a $10.8billion funding deficit (yes you read that right). In 10 years 133 facilities reach end of life; 44 must close. Sutcliffe's 2.5% tax cap doesn't fix it. Leiper's plan does.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

Mark Sutcliffe pointed to his $2M major festivals fund. He'd add $200K a year for the OAG and double a community cultural facilities fund to $500K. Nothing new for working artists. He said there haven't been arts cuts on his watch. Rivals said funding has trailed inflation, a cut in real terms.

Neil Saravanamuttoo said residents have been "trained to expect too little" of City Hall. He wants transparency on arts spending/festival costs and funding indexed to inflation. He'd hold open town halls with the arts sector and work to make empty Bank Street storefronts into an arts district.

Packed house at tonight's Arts Ottawa mayoral debate. Four candidates, four takes on the state of arts funding. Detailed plan from Jeff Leiper to catch funding up to inflation via higher tax increases. He would rent city space to arts groups and create a gear lending library for small festivals.

"Adding an additional one percent to property taxes costs the average household a mere $45 a year. A six percent increase would cost it only $275. By contrast, someone relying on a car for want of public transit is looking at spending some $16,000 a year to keep it on the road."

The city's failure to increase the number of pools as the city grows means two companies in Orléans have built their own pools just to teach kids to swim. Registration issues are the symptom. Insufficient investment in pools is due to extremely low taxes. Set a higher tax cap target.
