First day of class: going over the syllabus and happily sharing my updated AI policy with students (the basic framework cribbed from Berkely Law) and, more importantly, the reasons why it needs to be banned in the arts, teacher education, and art education specifically. #EduSky #AI #HigherEd

Any use of GenAI tools to generate course work will be considered a violation of the university’s Academic Honesty policy and is subject to appropriate discipline.
The purposes of this policy are:
1. to ensure the best education possible for University of Maine students in Art Education by equipping them to perform activities constitutive of excellent teaching, such as:
• mastering pedagogical theory,
• using scholarly reasoning and critical thinking to devise lessons
• applying educational and developmental concepts to novel pedagogical questions, and
• independently making art, performing, and collaboratively developing creative solutions;
2. to promote fairness and equity for artists, academics, authors, and others whose work has been and is used without consent or compensation to train, develop, refine, maintain, and advance GenAI;
3. to resist the uncritical adoption of GenAI in education and the arts, prevent the encroachment of surveillance capitalism, reverse environmental collapse; and
4. to preserve the right of students to be taught by a human teacher, to perform authentic tasks, to learn using human means, and to be authentically assessed by a human assessor without technological mediation, intervention, or control.
