a major reason why hijackings ended after 9/11 was that passengers no longer had any reason to passively accept them due to fear of death. any hijacking could be a prelude to a suicide attack. so now any hint of unruly passenger doing something out of line leads to his fellows beating him into paste

The funniest thing about this is every Special Forces operator of the last generation — the exact kind of “warfighter” Hegseth purports to idolize — has the world’s most massive beard. That’s entirely the look of today’s supersoldiers.

I love Thing Doer settings. Both Ace Combat and Pokémon are Thing Doer settings. Everything revolves around the Thing One Does. I dropped my daughter off at prom in a F/A-18. Dragonite does my taxes. All human activity revolves around Thing. Fuck you.

This article is having a great time swinging away at a strawman. "Trump's gains amongst Texas Latinos wasn't durable" is being treated as a rebuttal against the highly credible claim that border/immigration chaos is what drove Texas Latinos to Trump in 2024.

Really enjoyed The Works of Vermin. Fun Victorianesque biopunk mashup. It says a lot about politics and art without (imo) really saying much, but I was really invested in the characters and what happened to them. It has fewer bugs than it's reputed to.

Once or twice, I can pretend that a voice coach who's a conventionally attractive woman has never heard a beloved metal classic, making googly eyes at, e.g., an Eric Adams falsetto. But when it's a whole genre that's algorithmically shoved in my face? I can't help but notice the artifice.

IMHO Canada tends toward heavily metropolitan areas. Most of our "second-tier" cities are actually just part of our first-tier metros. We also just don't have that many cities overall because there's 40 million of us. Our 6th-biggest city is Winnipeg at 700,000 people.

This year I've noticed antisemitism leaking into the jokes and comments in nearly every social space I'm in. It's a really serious problem. It has never been more essential to draw a clear moral line between diaspora Jews and Israel. The latter is a boat anchor tied to the former's safety.

It's strange to see a journalist mix the safe, responsible description "accused" into the same comment as a casual description of the accused as rapists. I swear it's like people get amnesia. Nobody's even bothering to wait to *hear* the other side of the story. They can't imagine there is one.

Much like democracy, it's the worst system except for all the others. The other way to look at this is that capitalism is so successful at producing goods and services that it can deliver unprecedented wealth *inefficiently*.

I am increasingly in love with the California state YIMBY law (the builder's remedy) that says to all the municipalities, do what you want, but if the result is insufficent housing builders are allowed to put up whatever they want.

Both are premised on the notion that you can just wish away uncomfortable problems at no cost by just passing laws that reinforce your own ideology. We can create more affordable housing for free by just demanding that it gets built without changing anything else in our lifestyle or way of business

So-called “inclusionary zoning,” the practice of requiring home builders to rent new apartments at a loss to low-income tenants, is a tax on new housing that worsens the housing shortage and raises rents overall in exchange for a handful of means-tested units. It’s bad policy!

This is a great article on a subject I've pondered before (where is America at present in an analogy to the Roman Republic). As bad as things have become over the past 25 years or so, IMHO the US is doing far better than the Roman Republic was, even prior to the Marius-Sulla civil war.

Tangential to this tangent, I am not ruling out Butlerian Jihad as a policy solution to AI-related concerns. That solution is going to look more and more practical as the Torment Nexus dipshits running these frontier labs start hooking up Claude to strong, agile, prehensile robots.

I hear this loud and clear. Mea culpa, I was part of the problem. But I think the answer is that you don't need to understand AI to regulate it better than at present. You arguably need an old-school federal product safety regulator unimpressed by hype who just says "your product did what now?"

Jensen is probably the most Jobs-like CEO left in the industry, in that he has a completely monomaniacal focus on producing and selling more GPUs no matter what. Things which are not relevant to that goal, such as knowing where you live, are discarded to fit more GPU sales ideas in his brain.

The Duke lacrosse case has definitely faded from public memory. There is a substantial chance that the rape suspects named did not actually rape anybody, especially since the investigation concluded by allowing the men named to continue their education. I hope the Cornell Sun has litigation funds.
