Loving my student game of Imperium Maledictum, especially the student playing the Administratum adept seconded to the Inquisition. The adept is having the time of his life, because he was going to be stuck at the same desk and hab unit for his short life, and can now... pass checkpoints.

Carmen opened her eyes. Waldo stood at the edge of the bed, looking out the window at the moon. On the floor were his cane, his striped shirt, his hat, his glasses, her scarlet hat and trenchoat... "How did you find me?" she whispered. He looked back at her, a skinny shadow limned in moonlight.

Actually, now that I think about it, orcs as a British Empire "martial race" would be fine if you gave them kilts and bagpipes.

The issue with "monsters are marginalized people in fantasy clothes" is that it ends up with things like people making orcs more explicitly like people from IRL sub-Saharan Africa. "There's kind of a racist subtext with orcs, so we've fixed it by making them H. Rider Haggard Zulus." Which, um.

Running a TTRPG adventure that you wrote is the polar opposite of 'Death Of The Author'. 'The Author Is In The Room And They're Trying To Kill You.'

The thing about Schaeffer-style Worldview Training is that it's lurking in the background of the last fifty years in all sorts of hidden ways. It is... no accident that some of the most prominent intellectual foot soldiers of Woke 1.0 were exvangelicals, for example.

Something I've said before is that in my early thirties, I thought that the "plans within plans" in Dune were unsophisticated, an adolescent's idea of Intrigue. These days, though, I realize that most IRL plots are usually pretty unsophisticated.

Also: actual false flag attacks (e.g. Mukden) are usually so glaringly obvious that they're less a "dupe an unwitting populace into war" and more, "Yeah we staged the attack, what are you gonna do about it?!"

Something I've thought about since grad school is that for medieval literature, often the most beautiful, haunting, and sublime works will survive in one manuscript, while the most tedious, hackneyed, over-written works will survive in hundreds.

Genuinely fascinating at the attempt to do nostalgia IP revivals that usually fail. Star Trek TNG came out around the time that a Dark Shadows remake aired as well as an attempted Bonanza: the Next Generation. Ppl have tried to reboot Buck Rogers a few times and it usually fizzles.

I mean, when I teach World Civ 2, I personally spend entirely too much time with Meiji through Militarist Japan. Part of this is because I have an unfortunate tendency to stan the genro in spite of all the culture and political time bombs they unwittingly planted.

Something that kind of saddens me is that sometime in the last five years I lost my ability to suspend my disbelief with YouTube reaction videos. I sort of feel like there's a "tragedy of commons" with willing suspension of disbelief in a lot of online spaces. (Thread, I guess?)

I just want a left-leaning social network where I can chat about nerd shit and read artists, writers, and academics sharing their thoughts. I don't want to share in the psychomachia of some of the most deeply unhappy people on God's green earth.

Anyway, upon reflection, apparently for a haunted house story to be really good and engaging it has to actually be *about* something else. Seriously, though, you should read Davi Lindsay's The Haunted Woman, which is a genuinely good haunted house story.

Last bit of Country Music Discourse and I'm done. Someone compared being deeply unpleasant and out of touch with people's musical taste to... Wait for it... MLK Jr's Letter From Birmingham Jail. Peak effing Bluesky. Just beautiful. (No, I'm not going to QT or screenshot.)

The thing about bsky dot app is that it was meant to basically be Twitter but Without Racists, but founder effect and path dependency turned it into a bubble of forty-year-old tumblrinas. Which is fine for what it is, but they do not exactly have their finger on the pulse of America.

Reading The Haunted Woman, the book David Lindsay wrote after he decided to try something more mainstream than Voyage to Arcturus. It's a book about a house bigger on the inside than outside, but actually about sex.

I can't help but notice that in the 1990s, there was a strong strain of progressive cultural relativism that's basically vanished, and vanished in a kind of dumb way, i.e., rather than grappling with cultural difference, just assume everyone is a re-skinned western upper-middle-class uni graduate.

My phone has a Texas area code and so I've been getting Paxton campaign texts. It would be no exaggeration to say that the substance of these texts is "Tr*nny tr*nny tr*nny." I really want him to lose if for no other reason than to show that culture war is a luxury belief and a losing one.

Yes, I am skeptical of the second round of, "Staffers say elected Dem is a Mean Mommy archetype," but this might also be because I keep thinking about how we *could* have been in the sixth year of the historical Klobuchar presidency, with full employment and a healthy 3% YoY inflation rate."

The funny thing is that you can trace a nearly straight line from the colonial Brits' idea of "martial races" to the Proud Warrior Race of SF/F. "We solved the problem of Tolkien's orcs being always evil by re-imagining orcs as H. Rider Haggard's Zulus! Please do not think too closely about this."

There are apparently people who look back to omnidirectional ideological policing and bullying, always looking over your shoulder for someone higher in the intersectional identity stack to pull rank, and think not, "Man, that was *exhausting,*" but rather, "Ah, those were the days."
