Pretty remarkable how quickly the idea of Low Traffic Neighborhoods has gained traction in New York after working in London.

With over 870 school streets in London, 66% of kids are now getting to school by active travel. Every day there are 73,915 fewer cars doing the school run than when we started in 2016 - that’s the equivalent of a traffic jam from London to Newcastle.

When Wales set a 20mph limit for most urban/village roads it made walking and cycling safer. On urban/village roads there were 23.9% fewer pedestrian casualties and 26.5 fewer cyclist casualties. But the largest casualty reduction was for car/van/taxi occupants where casualties reduced by 29.2%.

Almost a third of the UK’s carbon emissions come from transport - more than any other sector - mostly from cars, vans and lorries. That's why choosing to travel more sustainably by public transport, walking/wheeling or cycling is one of the most effective things we can do to tackle climate change.
31% of UK carbon emissions are from transport, the highest among all sectors, illustrated by a car emitting exhaust on an orange background.

This is equally true for city planners and our plans and city-building ideas. You have to persuasively SELL those ideas to the public — a public that’s inundated with disinformation. And even once you get an idea or plan passed, you have to KEEP selling it, to “election proof” it.

WECA gets £11.78m. Works out to ~£11.80/head*, which puts it mid-table nationally (38th of 80 transport authorities), well below big combined authorities like Greater Manchester or West Midlands (~£12.35/head) and far behind top-funded areas like Gloucestershire or Oxfordshire (~£26-27/head).

You’re about 10x less likely to die as a pedestrian in Amsterdam, than as a pedestrian in Portland, OR. The Netherlands overall is one of the safest places to be a pedestrian in Europe. Cities which have replaced bike infra for cars are better for pedestrian safety. They’re simply less dangerous.
