A report on 5 years of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in East Oxford shows that they have reduced road casualties by over 100. The report by the Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel (CoHSAT) also points to the health benefits of reduced air pollution and performance of Cowley Road shops.

Oxford LTNs 5 years on: Over 100 injuries avoided, cleaner air and shops outperforming the UK - CoHSAT
Oxford’s Cowley and East Oxford Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) have now been in place for about five years[1]. In that time, road casualties have been reduced by over 100, air pollution has been reduced, and Cowley Road shops have outperformed national trends. The LTNs have reduced road casualties both in the LTN areas, and on

It’s true that Old Market would be massively improved by a bike lane. And also a tram interchange.

Can’t help but feel they’ve gone to 11 just to include Bristol. And Old Market isn’t the coolest neighbourhood - it’s the weird in between place.

Pretty remarkable how quickly the idea of Low Traffic Neighborhoods has gained traction in New York after working in London.

With over 870 school streets in London, 66% of kids are now getting to school by active travel. Every day there are 73,915 fewer cars doing the school run than when we started in 2016 - that’s the equivalent of a traffic jam from London to Newcastle.

When Wales set a 20mph limit for most urban/village roads it made walking and cycling safer. On urban/village roads there were 23.9% fewer pedestrian casualties and 26.5 fewer cyclist casualties. But the largest casualty reduction was for car/van/taxi occupants where casualties reduced by 29.2%.

Almost a third of the UK’s carbon emissions come from transport - more than any other sector - mostly from cars, vans and lorries. That's why choosing to travel more sustainably by public transport, walking/wheeling or cycling is one of the most effective things we can do to tackle climate change.
31% of UK carbon emissions are from transport, the highest among all sectors, illustrated by a car emitting exhaust on an orange background.

Fed up with people shirking responsibility by arguing that the UK causes just 1% of emissions? Here are two fantastic analogies from a primary school teacher, Mark in Coventry, who called Sheila Fogerty on @lbc.co.uk - one involving dog poo 😆 Other arguments here: www.nebriefing.org/mp-dialogue

This is equally true for city planners and our plans and city-building ideas. You have to persuasively SELL those ideas to the public — a public that’s inundated with disinformation. And even once you get an idea or plan passed, you have to KEEP selling it, to “election proof” it.

*worked out by Claude; WECA = Bristol + South Glos + BANES pop ≈ 1,000,800 (2024 ONS). £11,783,694 ÷ 1,000,800 ≈ £11.77/head. Compared using same method across all 80 English local transport authorities to get the rank.
000
Lyndsey Melling @grandnarrative.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
WECA gets £11.78m. Works out to ~£11.80/head*, which puts it mid-table nationally (38th of 80 transport authorities), well below big combined authorities like Greater Manchester or West Midlands (~£12.35/head) and far behind top-funded areas like Gloucestershire or Oxfordshire (~£26-27/head).

…how that headline number feels to your personal circumstances depends; how many children you have, how much debt, where you live. You can be in the top 20% and be very comfortable or just getting by.

The answer would always be ‘as little as possible’, as is true of every household cost. But utilities without competition function as taxation without the democratic accountability that makes taxation legitimate. Complaining is the only recourse consumers have

Lyndsey Melling @grandnarrative.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Different measure; £39k is individual full-time pay. Household income counts everyone in the home, equivalised for household size. Two earners on £38k = £76k household, well above median household income (~£32-36k) - easily top 20%, since most households aren’t two full-time earners.
100
Lyndsey Melling @grandnarrative.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Median full-time pay (ASHE 2025) is ~£39k, not £30k. But mean full-time pay is higher still, ~£45-48k - because a small number of very high earners pull it up.
