How much does it cost to get more information about a cop who punched someone in the face? If you guessed anything lower than $2.5 million, you’d be wrong — at least according to the city of Eugene, Oregon. buff.ly/AlxYU8S

I have been banned from every grocery store in town due to pissing and shitting in the aisles and blaming the cashiers. My strategy for eating food, after the one source of food has said I'm not allowed in, is to simply keep eating food at the same rate as before - forever.

I have some food in my pantry, which I assume is a bottomless, infinite cornucopia of exactly the ingredients I need. Barring that, I can scrounge from dumpsters or beg for scraps. This is undoubtedly equivalent to the previous situation of unfettered access to a wide variety of grocery stores.

Putting aside everything else, SecDef should not be awoken in the middle of the night because one fighter got shot down. This is a routine event in a real war that should be handled by local commanders. If this went to SecDef, it is because no one in command is treating this like a real war.

The evil Confederate translation of Les Misérables: "We've omitted parts Hugo meant only for French readers, like the sentences condemning slavery." Victor Hugo: "I wrote my classic novel 'Do Not Oppress People' for literally every person and country in the world."
Text reading:

In May, 1863, at Richmond, Virginia, appeared the first volume
of the Confederate translation of Les Miserables, which was intended
to be a vast improvement over the Yankee version of Charles E.
Wilbour. As the " Editor's Preface " states (I, p. iv) : " The trans-
lation (= Wilbour's) which has been adopted as the basis of the
present reprint, although in the main spirited and faithful, is dis-
figured by numerous errors and misapprehensions of peculiar French
idioms, some of them even of a ludicrous nature. The work of revising
and correcting it for republication was commenced by that accom-
plished scholar, Professor A. Dimitry; but the pressure of other
engagements having compelled that gentleman to give up the under-
taking after he had progressed as far as page 49 of this edition, the
task of revision was entrusted by the publishers to the present editor,
. . ."(Signed) "A. F."
It was the original intention that the translation should be nearly
complete. Omitted, however, were to be " several long, and ... rather
rambling disquisitions . . . exclusively intended for the French readers
of the book." Moreover, the editor added: "A few scattered sentences,
reflecting on slavery-which the author, with strange inconsistency,
has thought fit to introduce into a work written mainly to denounce
the European systems of labor as gigantic instruments of tyranny and
oppression-it has also been deemed advisable to strike out . . . theText reading:

words in the original French. Hugo explained his ambitions for the novel to his Italian publisher:[24]

I don't know whether it will be read by everyone, but it is meant for everyone. It addresses England as well as Spain, Italy as well as France, Germany as well as Ireland, the republics that harbour slaves as well as empires that have serfs. Social problems go beyond frontiers. Humankind's wounds, those huge sores that litter the world, do not stop at the blue and red lines drawn on maps. Wherever men go in ignorance or despair, wherever women sell themselves for bread, wherever children lack a book to learn from or a warm hearth, Les Misérables knocks at the door and says: "open up, I am here for you".

The tech collective behind NoBlogs.org and a host of other free online initiatives has announced that they are shutting down as a consequence of the US State Department designating them a "global terrorist." This represents a significant blow to online freedom. keepitfree.ai/announcement...
The day we discovered we had been designated a global terrorist organization, we promised that we would try to resist as long as this was possible, that we would not back down as long as we could see options to stand our ground. For years, we have proudly maintained and defended a free, privacy-friendly, autonomous and politically committed infrastructure.

“Stay human” is not an empty phrase to us.

It means, above all, that we have a responsibility to protect our users, those who build the human networks we rely, and for the communities who flooded us with messages of support and solidarity. Now turn off your PCs, get out of your homes, struggle, hug each other and keep on smiling. We are stopping, but the Resistance and ideas do not stop. Stay human.

We will soon send instructions on how to back up the content of your blogs, mailboxes and websites, along with more technical recommendations. But keep in mind that, just as the autistici.org domain was made unreachable without previous notice, in the next few days we might suffer similar issues that we may not be able to predict.
