This is a good @billmckibben.bsky.social post - and this specific part is extremely important and touches on a tension right deep at the heart of all this It is worth repeating this point persistently, because it has been forgotten in so many spaces billmckibben.substack.com/p/reform-or-...
The first thing to remember is, the real goal for people who care about the climate above all is not to build more renewables, it’s to drive down the amount of carbon flowing into the atmosphere. Building more renewables is a key way of doing that—but only if they displace fossil fuel.

And here is an important divergence: for many people working in the clean energy industry, victory looks like doubling or tripling their output, even if fossil fuel is growing fast at the same time. Even if they got into this fight for the right reasons, their commitment is—because, capitalism—to their bottom line. It’s important not to confuse the two motivations, because physics only cares about the carbon. If transmission corridors are matched by new gas pipelines, we haven’t made much progress.

Oh god, they did @brainmage.bsky.social's poem.
A prom about proper bin men

You kids today, with 'net and games,
I fought in World War 2
You're not content with airfix planes,
I fought in World War 2
In my day (nineteen ninety three),
We didn't have what's yours
Things were much simpler, much less woke,
I fought in World War 2
School lunches, Oh! Pink custard too,
Four channels on TV
Not like the iphones you have now,
Was simpler then, you see?
"Image Macros" were all the rage,
There was no twitch TV
I fought in World War 2, respect
The man who's forty three

One of the hardest things about being a cyclist is dealing with the nagging feeling that a serious crash is inevitable. Because you can indeed do everything "right" and it still does not matter.
I followed every precaution and it didn’t matter

New to biking here

I started in July around the time of the fatal car crash with that biker. That and hearing everyone who bikes to work tell me that they have had horrid experiences with cars was disheartening.

I made sure to only use protected routes. I take Southwest corridor for basically my whole trip and even though it adds so much more time to my commute, it makes me feel safe.

None of that mattered because at some point, even for a second you will hit the main road. And you will always lose to the 4 ton machine. I got hit by a car parking in the bike lane. He was more concerned with his car than the fact that I could have my life potential altered forever because he was looking at his phone. And at the end of the day, the police can literally choose to not respond to your 911 call and you get stuck with medical bills.

It’s hard to have a conversation about sharing the road when people in cars feel entitled to do whatever they want and the only person who’s ever in danger is the biker. I love biking in this city and I have found a really love and joy for the outdoors because of it. Now I am terrified to even get on a bike lane, even if there is one, if it’s shared with the main road.

We could reduce US fossil-fuel pollution (climate & local air/water) ~25% by cleaning up the grid, ~25% by electrifying ground transport, and ~25% by electrifying heat (for space/water/food/many industrial processes). The last ~25% - everything else - is important but no reason not to do the 75%.
