The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

“Was ist Aura?” (What is Aura?), Walter Benjamin’s notes for The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction on San Pellegrino stationary, San Remo, c. 1935. (Walter Benjamin Archive, Akademie der Künste, Berlin)
Handwritten notes, in German, on a page so S. Pellegrino stationary. Text reads: "Was ist Aura?

The final solution for AI in academia is a scenario where students are submitting AI-generated homework to be graded by AI-generated faculty using AI agents, all of which is being overseen by highly paid administrators who are extracting money from the students in exchange for a degree. The end.

Hello Miriam Posner,

I hope you’re doing well.

My name is Aileen, and I’m the founder and organizer of Boozy Bronx Book Club, a 1,400+ member in-person reading community in New York City centered around thoughtful, high-engagement discussions.

I recently came across Seeing Like a Supply Chain, and was especially drawn to its exploration of technological systems of distribution. What stood out most was structural back-end shipping tracking, which feels like the kind of nuance that naturally sparks layered and honest conversation in our group.

Really interesting that they’re using a Tower of Babel analogy (structure built by humans to concentrate Earthly power) rather than the antichrist, AI backers’ preferred analogy, one that suggests AI is an entity rather than a thing. Almost like the Catholic church has read the Bible.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.
