I do wonder the degree to which people still believe that FFP was *only* about protecting the biggest clubs. Which for those of us that remember the amount of administrations in the 90s-00s is plain silly. But... these are now the rules. And City willfully broke them and covered it up.

Show the population the joys of an intra-Schengen flight and watch those numbers change. Was genuinely mind-blowing to me.

Interesting discussions herein. I think a hybrid system could do some work here - halve the number of constituency seats to 325, but apportion the rest of the 325 in such a way that the final House looks as close as possible to % of national vote. Keep your MP, but also have "list" members.

In some ways it would be a shame for Ocon to leave (though there are so few slots, someone always misses out). That said, he seemed to make some enemies everywhere he went. I wonder what happens in an alternate universe where some of those bridges don't get quite so singed?

Also actually the suffering for any football fans pales in comparison to people who are victims of human rights abuses in the UAE, or of the gross violence carried out by UAE-backed forces in the Horn of Africa. That’s what this sports-washing exercise ultimately helps sustain.

It’s useful to remember that sometimes an a hominem argument is correct and useful. Impeaching the witness is maybe the fancy name. I don’t know there’s a formal name for the variant of appeal to authority/anti impeachment/just debate me bro/don’t be emotional line.

There are a lot of people fundamentally unable to understand relative risk. It is absolutely true that there's a risk of martyring him. I would put that as a lower risk and something we can deal with later versus *allowing racist crimes to go unpunished and send the message that they will be so*.

Some of the replies to this confirming something I'm increasingly losing patience with: people confusing "I don't like this" with "this is objectively awful and anyone who likes it is awful". (Ian is not doing this.)

Yes. “If you defund and deplatform anti-racists then that will force their movement underground, and then they will be truly dangerous!” is never, ever an argument you will hear from the right-wing media. Because they know very well that defunding and deplatforming *actually works*.

My most neoliberal opinion is that management of large organisations takes skills and experience that the core frontline staff of that organisation might not have. My social democratic one is that this is why the CEO should be democratically accountable to people who know what the org ACTUALLY is.

Time to jump into the discourse. I'm not that averse to funding applications and competitions. What I'm averse to is that this is in many cases the only way that a career can start or continue. For some fields, it would be more efficient to give everyone €5k p.a. and let them work on their book...
