We can rein in generative AI, the companies behind it, and the harms it causes. But that requires actually wanting to understand the impacts it’s having today, not allowing ourselves to be led astray by people who benefit from lying to us and disrupting regulation. disconnect.blog/the-media-ha...
All those harms are not nearly as simple of a story nor one as sensational as telling people that AI might kill us all in ten years or so. But it’s irresponsible not to be focusing on it more because those are all the ways AI is really harming people today, and how they’ll continue to well into the future if AI companies and the executives that lead them are not brought to heel as soon as possible.

Generative AI and the harms it causes are not inevitable. AI superintelligence is nothing more than a science fiction story that increasingly delusional and disconnected tech people are telling themselves. We can act to rein in the real harms of AI today, but that means not falling for the targeted deception of an industry trying to avoid regulation and finally holding them accountable for the widespread consequences we’ve all had to shoulder in their pursuit of power and profit.

Anthropic coined a new research term: "self healing studies."
Historically, it was hard to adapt research studies after they launch. The researcher writes the study guide, the interviews run, and if users raise something new along the way, it has to wait for the next study.
In a "self healing study", there is a continuous feedback loop between interviews and the study guide. Each round of interviews identifies new topics, they are added to the guide, and the next interviews explore them.
Nothing waits for a follow-up study - the guide keeps evolving with the study.
And the researcher sits above all of it as the guardrails.
The study proposes additional topics, and the researcher uses their judgment to decide which ones deserve exploring.
The term comes from Jane Justice Leibrock's team at Anthropic, from their churn interviews on Claude Code.
Before we even had an MCP, Anthropic built its own plugin to run Listen studies because they wanted them running around the clock.
That's the future of research.

INTRODUCTION
The Borg are one of science fiction's most terrifying villains, representing the ultimate violation of individual identity and autonomy. A vast cybernetic Collective, the Borg travel the
galaxy seeking out new civilizations to assimilate. In order to forcibly absorb their victims into the Collective's shared hive mind, the Borg physically restructure them at a cellular level until
each individual's identity is consumed. The Borg's chilling catchphrase captures it plainly: "We are the Borg. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own.
Resistance is futile. " Autonomy is consumed and repurposed in the service of a cold machine intelligence that feels nothing for what it has taken. In one memorable scene, the beloved Captain Jean-Luc Picard is captured by the Borg and remade as a machine version of himself-— recognizable, but also wrong, Captain Picard was deployed to the Borg's purpose.?l

(whispering) you don’t have to comply, you’re a $4 trillion corporation in a capitalist society
Markets Do Not Punish Firms for Maintaining DEI*
Hanna Folsz
Jacob M. Grumbach*
August 14, 2026
Abstract
The Trump administration has used executive authority to influence the behavior of civil society organizations such as law firms, universities, and corporations.
Do corporations that resist executive orders perform worse financially? In January 2025, the Trump administration issued an executive order directing federal agencies to investigate and compel firms to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Some firms complied with the order, whereas other firms resisted by reaffirming their DEl programs. We find that S&P 500 firms that maintained their DEI programs performed just as well as compliant firms, both in terms of stock market returns and revenue. The results are robust across various measures of maintaining DEI, including measures based on executives' public statements about DEI programs, interest group ratings, firm financial statements, and shareholder rejections of anti-DEl resolutions. The results suggest that, at least in some areas, firms can resist pressure from the executive branch with minimal costs to financial performance.

A consistent pitch by the makers of ai wearables is that they solve the problem of getting to know your child. www.businessinsider.com/parents-brea...
Molly, who runs a startup to help parents book activities for kids, is willing to use AI for logistics, like meal planning or sorting through her email to surface the most important messages from their daughter's school. Sean, who works in tech sales, wants to go further. He has his eyes on Omi necklace, an AI wearable that listens in on your day and includes a feature called Parent Whisperer. It records and analyzes interactions between parent and child, logging things like school assignments and supplies to order. The device also picks up on tone, alerting parents when their kid may be unhappy — registering everything from "from toddler tantrums to teenage mood swings," per its ad copy — and offering "expert-backed guidance" on how to respond.

Bloomberg just estimated that planned data centre gas plants will increase US power emissions by 20%. For some perspective: by my calcs, that is the same as the UK's entire economy-wide 2025 emissions.
Bar chart comparing annual country CO2 emissions (gray bars) to emissions from proposed gas-powered data centres (purple), highlighting that planned gas data centres would produce roughly the same emissions as the entire United Kingdom.Ninety-nine proposed plants tracked by BloombergNEF would emit about 318 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually if run at industry-standard rates, according to a Bloomberg News analysis. The entire US electric power industry emitted about 1,485 million metric tons of carbon last year, according to Energy Information Administration data, meaning one slice of data center infrastructure has the potential to lift US power sector emissions by 20%, and as much as a third should the new plants run flat out.
The data center building boom has already strained the US electricity system, prompting reliability concerns and moratoriums on new project approvals. With even greenlit facilities facing yearslong delays connecting to regulated electricity grids, data center developers are seeking alternatives. These include so-called behind-the-meter projects that can be permitted and built without the approval of utilities or the independent system operators charged with ensuring grid reliabilit
