Permitting reform is the new carbon tax. Will only work in a political reality that doesn’t exist and has extreme downsides, yet is always seen as the answer. I’m going to die hearing people wax on about these zombie ideas.

Let's install two-way heat pumps, not one-way air conditioners: Reduce pollution by displacing fossil-fueled heat while adding AC that may save lives during the next heatwave.

Listen, @adamjentleson.bsky.social, you willfully ignorant fool. The idea that a bill that radically transforms the entire domain of energy & environmental protection should not be assessed on a single reductionist metric that hides massive fossil fuel entrenchment should not be in dispute.
Jentleson: "It’s instructive to see groups ostensibly dedicated to fighting climate change say they don’t think a bill should be judged by whether it reduces carbon emissions" quote posting an excerpt of from a leaked transcript of a call as follows: "Yeah. So we we made. We made the point that this bill should not be judged just
based on a net emissions analysis, and that that sweeps aside ecological and
community values. So there was an ask about what that. look like? So that would be a
good thing for folks to ponder as they're engaging in offices. Like, we'd like to
see… and what we… and then, so as an example, we said we'd love an assessment to…
we'd love an assessment to see what this means for public lands. You know, how many
data centers would this open the doors to? How much additional fossil fuel
development would this open the door to? How would this impact habitat quality on
public land? So focusing on that public land side of the equation and the
infrastructure that would be built on public lands. But that's that's just one
domain, you know. You could see it also with imperiled species or environmental
justice. I don't know what those analyses look like at that level. But I think
that's something that we could push."

Today Permitting Reform advocates are all pivoting to the message that this bill will make tech companies bear the costs for data-center power use. But here's a fact: the lobbying group for Big Tech loves the bill and wants it to pass. Weird contradiction, no?
ITI: Permitting Reform is Essential to Maintain America's Technology Leadership
• September 30, 2026 WASHINGTON - Following release of the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026, global
tech trade association ITI President and CEO Jason Oxman issued the following statement: "Comprehensive permitting reform is essential to America's ability to build, compete, and lead - especially in the Al era. Greater certainty, lower costs, and faster deployment of critical infrastructure will help power
the next era of American growth while maintaining important environmental safeguards. "The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act is an encouraging step forward and offers a strong foundation to shorten environmental review timelines, streamline transmission permitting and planning, enable deployment of advanced transmission technologies, and leverage Al to address interconnection
delays. "Congress should act to deliver lasting permitting reform that allows America to build at the speed and
scale our economic security demands."ITI Members

I say this as a climate person, there is more than the energy transition. We don’t get to a just transition by ignoring environmental injustices and just transition is the only way forward. Otherwise, we’re just replicating the failures of fossil fuels. Please don’t have climate myopia.

I was told by a Hill staffer that this Permitting Reform bill allows fossil fuel companies to enlarge (that is, expand) their natural gas pipelines without any environmental review so long as there's an existing pipeline in place. This is very bad.

One thing to bear in mind about a federal permitting bill is that its mistakes would be essentially permanent - Dems could only reverse mistakes with a filibuster-proof 60-vote supermajority in the Senate. Repubs, on the other hand, could use captured courts to shave off bits their donors dislike.

The more energy-efficient we are (snugger buildings, better equipment, more active/public transit, lighter cars) and the less energy we waste on harmful or pointless stuff (hi, GW AI data centers!), the faster we can do the 75%, the less grid buildout we need, and the less electricity prices rise.

They repeatedly left more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers underpaid or paid late, causing them immense stress and financial difficulty.
That's unacceptable.
We've secured a $131.5M settlement from
