Democracy means a society and system in which everyone’s rights matter. Rapists count on this being untrue – and Trump is proving them right

Rape is a crime against democracy in the most immediate sense of equality between individuals and the premise that we’re all endowed with certain inalienable rights. Most rapists operate on the premise that they can not only overpower the victim physically, but can do so socially and legally. They count on a system that discounts the voices of victims and only too often cooperates in silencing them, through shame, intimidation, threats, discrediting, the obscene legal instrument known as a nondisclosure agreement and a system too often run by men for men at the expense of women and children. That is to say, rapists count on getting away with it because of a system that hands them power and steals it from their victims. They count on a silencing system. On profound inequality.

Which is what makes rape such a peculiar crime: it is the ritual enactment of the perpetrator’s power and the victim’s powerlessness, buttressed by the circumstances that puts and keeps each of them in those roles. It’s driven by the desire to use sexuality to cause physical and psychic injury, to dominate, to celebrate the rapist’s power and the victim’s powerlessness, to treat another human being as a person without rights, including the right to set boundaries, to say no and to speak up afterward. A society that perpetuates and protects this desire and arrangement is rape culture, and it’s been our culture throughout most of its existence.

I would kill or die for Larry
A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

Forcing immigrant detainees to work for their captors isn’t just exploitative It’s unconstitutional Trump's policies are dramatically expanding both the immigration detention population and the nation’s Thirteenth Amendment crisis ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
screenshotted excerpt from the linked article reading as follows:

Forcing immigrant detainees to work for their captors isn’t just exploitative. It’s unconstitutional. The Thirteenth Amendment explicitly prohibits slavery and indentured servitude, except “as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” But immigration detention is a form of civil confinement. People held in detention centers are simply waiting—behind bars—for the resolution of their immigration cases. This is punitive in practice, but not in law, as they are incarcerated, but not in prison. Only 12 percent of the people who have been detained at Delaney Hall since it opened have ever been convicted of anything.

❗️FBI is reaching out to people who were previously arrested by NJSP during protests outside Delaney Hall. Some have received phone calls or door knocks. National Lawyers Guild is spreading an advisory for people to contact their hotline if feds come knocking:
On Friday June 5th, at least 2 comrades arrested by state troopers on 5/29 at Delaney Hall were called by someone who self-identified as an FBI agent. On Saturday, June 6th, at least one comrade received a phone call followed by a doorknock by the FBI
PHONE CALLS AND DOOR KNOCKS FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT: if you receive a phone call from a number you don't know: Ask "who is this?" and write down their response. Ask the agent 1) their agency, 2) the agent's name, and 3) their phone number. tell them 4) you will not answer any questions and 5) a lawyer will contact them. Hang up as soon as you get their name and agency. If it is a doorknock, ask for the same info (name, agency, phone number) or for them to slide a card under the door --DO NOT open the door. You have a constitutional right to remain silent and you have a constitutional right to not open your door or let law enforcement into your home without a warrant. Since it is also crime to lie to law enforcement, the safest thing is to only "leave your name and number. a lawyer will contact you."
If feds call or come knocking call the National Lawyers Guild's Federal
Defense Hotline 212-679-2811. Leave your name and phone number. A lawyer will contact you so that you can have a privileged conversation about your rights, risks, and responsibilities and be connected with appropriate legal resources.

This graphic compares how South Carolina's Republican gerrymanders target Black voters. Current 6-1 map: The GOP packed them into the 6th District to make the other 6 heavily white and GOP. Proposed 7-0 map: The GOP would crack Black voters among 6 districts to make all 7 majority white and GOP.
Comparison graphic titled "South Carolina 2024 and 2026 Congressional Maps" from The Downballot. Two side-by-side maps show South Carolina's seven congressional districts using a precinct-level color scale from light yellow (0% Black adult population) to dark green (100% Black adult population). District boundaries are outlined in magenta.

**Current 6-1 Republican Map (left):** Dark green precincts — indicating high Black adult population — cluster around Columbia, the central Black Belt, and Charleston. These concentrations fall mostly within District 6, an irregularly shaped district connecting these areas. The remaining six districts are predominantly light yellow. Caption: the map "packs Black voters into the 6th District so that the other six are heavily white."

**Proposed 2026 7-0 Republican Map (right):** The same dark green precincts appear geographically but are split across multiple redrawn districts. No single district captures a majority of high-concentration Black precincts. Caption: the map "cracks Black voters among six districts so that all seven are majority white."

**Data tables** show 2024 presidential vote and adult racial demographics per district. Key difference: under the current map, District 6 is 46.9% Black adult and voted 60.5% Harris. Under the proposed map, no district exceeds 37.9% Black adult population, and all seven districts voted majority Trump (54.8%–72.4%). Statewide totals are identical in both maps: Harris 40.4%, Trump 58.2%; 64.9% white adults, 25.3% Black adults.
