RNA binding proteins ( #RBPs ) are reported to bind many RNAs, but which targets are functionally relevant? This study by @labgrosshans.bsky.social shows that only two targets of LIN28 RBP are required to regulate cell identity and developmental tempo in C. elegans. 🧪 #AcademicSky plos.io/3THliab
The precocious exit from the molting cycle of lin-28(0) animals is suppressed by lin-46(0).

The images show developmental defects in worms that went through a normal (left, 4M) or aberrant (middle and right, 4M*) fourth molt.
Example DIC images of the head (top row) and the vulva (bottom row) regions of lin-28(0); lin-46(0).

The animals were extracted from the luciferase assay plate after 52 h, classified according to their luminescence intensity pattern and examined under the microscope. The 4M* animals exhibited a defect in pharyngeal cuticle shedding ranging from a part of the old cuticle remaining attached to the animal through the mouth plug (middle, white arrow) to a ripped-out pharynx (right, pharynx traced with a red dashed line, head traced with a white dashed line). All 4M* animals exhibited egg-laying defect as demonstrated by the retained embryos of advanced developmental stages. Scale bars: 10 μm.
