I definitely don't think all romance novels need to model ideal behavior, but I am just not the audience for romance that is not interested in how power shapes the way we get to love & have sex and right now brushing that off feels more upsetting than usual given our backsliding rights.

HOLY PA-01 SCOOP IN POLITICO!! Brian Fitzpatrick's awful ads seem to show a bunch of news headlines. But those deceptive quotes didn't come from actual news reports - they were written by one of his wedding guests, a felon who was once on the payroll of his own campaign, who self-published them!

and, of course, the Trump Administration is boosting and tapping into organized crime and gang exploitation They love crime, especially crime impacting non-white people they only object to crime for which they don't personally benefit
Some brigades operate inside the fence, on Minerven property. The leader of one brigade told The Times that, each month, 20 percent of the team’s gold goes to the gang, a practice that is so ingrained in the local economy that it is known as “el sistema” — the system.

Another portion of what they collect, the brigade leader said, goes to Minerven, which melts it down along with the gold being sold to Trafigura. That account is supported by interviews with other brigade members in the area as well as Minerven employees.

That means that, in the Trump administration’s signature Venezuelan gold venture, the United States is importing bars that contain at least some amount of gold linked to Tren de Guayana.

David Soud, an investigator specializing in tracing illicit gold, whom Trafigura hired as a consultant this summer, acknowledged that operating in Venezuela remains risky.

“What I can say is that exploitation is deeply entrenched in the Venezuelan gold ecosystem,” he said. “And it is extremely challenging to work to build a supply chain that is free of it.”

Dozens of Venezuelan military officers still hold managerial posts at Minerven, despite Mr. Trump’s earlier concerns that Venezuela’s armed forces oversaw gold-related corruption.

One of the hardest things about being a cyclist is dealing with the nagging feeling that a serious crash is inevitable. Because you can indeed do everything "right" and it still does not matter.
I followed every precaution and it didn’t matter

New to biking here

I started in July around the time of the fatal car crash with that biker. That and hearing everyone who bikes to work tell me that they have had horrid experiences with cars was disheartening.

I made sure to only use protected routes. I take Southwest corridor for basically my whole trip and even though it adds so much more time to my commute, it makes me feel safe.

None of that mattered because at some point, even for a second you will hit the main road. And you will always lose to the 4 ton machine. I got hit by a car parking in the bike lane. He was more concerned with his car than the fact that I could have my life potential altered forever because he was looking at his phone. And at the end of the day, the police can literally choose to not respond to your 911 call and you get stuck with medical bills.

It’s hard to have a conversation about sharing the road when people in cars feel entitled to do whatever they want and the only person who’s ever in danger is the biker. I love biking in this city and I have found a really love and joy for the outdoors because of it. Now I am terrified to even get on a bike lane, even if there is one, if it’s shared with the main road.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.
