Termination without cause in Japan is complex and workers have a lot of rights and protections we don't in the US. If Japan had employment laws as weak as ours, Nintendo would undoubtedly lay off workers just the same. It's not management's benevolence or farsightedness, it's labor law.

A little historical note on that: colorization was never actually the point. 🧵 I was in post production at Lorimar in the late eighties while the colorization was going on. I had a good friend who was involved in doing the restoration work prior to colorization.
