trying to think what my new 1CCs have been so far this year. contra, super contra, darius gaiden, cadash, night striker, golden axe, double dragon, shinobi, altered beast... i honestly think shinobi was the hardest of those. sadly i'd have to say altered beast was the least fun... i want to love it

it's so awesome that arcade games are genuinely really hard and also feature tons of puzzles where the solution is "stand right here and just mash the fire button over and over again without much particular regard for timing." like both things are true. it's beautiful

1ccd shinobi again. if i'd been old enough to go to arcades when this shit was out i would have been a shinobi maniac. i would have been watching over people's shoulders like "mm. if you sit there you can melee the knife guys safely" annoying them to death. instead i suck at the game

usually when i have dreams about fighting games they're annoying. constantly landing lk lk+psylocke and getting my OTG rolled, meaties inexplicably whiffing, etc. i just fell asleep for an hour or two in the middle of the day and had one that was so completely the opposite of this it was comical

i definitely still have some serious recovery to do but it's already eye-opening how different it feels to eat after the surgery. feels like i've been tanking gallstone discomfort possibly since i was a teenager because i simply wasn't aware it wasn't supposed to feel like that

we're back to counting steps by the thousands. my appetite hasn't quite bounced back from the operation, but other than that things are looking good i think. i had a hell of a time getting around this morning but now i'm definitely in the best shape i've been in since the surgery

the scoreboard on an emulated Shinobi arcade machine. First place is DOT with 267,560 points on one credit. You'll have to take my word for it that I beat the game, because the game doesn't actually communicate that.

god I have to put together a mockup for a commission, and for once it's actually something I could draw well enough, BUT... since I'm still injured I can't actually get my drawing tablet out or set it up or anything. definitely gonna have to draw up one of those horrible-looking mspaint mockups...

something i miss about retro games that you probably can't bring back is there was a time when it was inherently impressive for sprites to be big. like you could see bosses like Damnd or Windy Plane and kind of get goosebumps just because they were so large
