executed during his term, according to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC).
Between 2014 and 2020, 160 executions were carried out by state governments, according to DPIC. Of those, only two Democratic governors oversaw any executions—the other was former Missouri governor Jay Nixon, who oversaw 17 of them.
Republican administrations carried out the remaining 140.
McAuliffe's website does not state his current position on capital punishment, and his campaign did not respond to a request for comment by publication. On Friday, gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Carroll Foy tweeted, "As a former public defender, I have seen the inequities in our criminal justice system firsthand. As Governor, I will repeal the death penalty in Virginia."

read your editorial. thought it was awful. question: why does the editorial consist of virtually no info on Caltrain, which serves more stations in San Jose than BART, and is planning for the same closures/cuts as BART should RTM fail to pass? shouldn't San Jose voters know RTM impacts Caltrain too?

FWIW: theologically speaking, the NAE (which represents evangelicals w/different capital punishment views) coming out against this is a bigger deal than the USCCB (a tradition that explicitly condemns the death penalty, full stop). The fact that they’re using the same terms is quite a thing.

The problem is the pipeline. The traditional "Sane conservative" spaces are all liberals or just straight fascists now. Pro-social conservative involved in civil society basically means "regular religious service attendee who votes Democrat." They *might* emerge as a faction in some blue states.

The problem as always goes back to right wing callousness, but there are now plenty of people in the NGO industrial complex who seem threatened by any change in this, too. Institutionalizing those unhoused people who are a threat to themselves and others is “carceral.”

NYC is on track to have its lowest rate of shootings EVER, and the thing that is going to ruin that is the presence of ICE. If the police commissioner cannot pick the side of New Yorkers, she obviously has to be fired. The numbers do not lie.

This is Nazi rhetoric, full stop. It's not only a call to instigate a race war in the United States, but it's reminiscent of historic European justifications used to incite pogroms against Jews. People who say things like this are incredibly dangerous, as there is nothing they won't eventually do.

This arbitrary change in terminology—which Trump and other members of his regime have done before—is a well-worn tactic for authoritarians. It may seem farcical, but that’s actually the point: it’s an intentional farce used to test the subservience of his supporters and the resolve of his enemies.
