For all those breathless commentators talking about USA stopping its leadership of the international legal order, I wonder how they factor in that US removed its signature from the ICJ in 1985 over being sued by Nicaragua. It's long been the case that US has sought to play by its own rules.

Generally, if a price is high for something then the costs of supplying that thing are high or there's a lack of real competition. If we want to get prices down, then we need to increase competition amongst suppliers first - that is market structures. No one owes anyone a "fair" price.

My friend's office is next door, I wasn't sure where she was at the time. Just heard from her and thankfully she is unharmed. What is happening in Kyiv right now is truly horrific. Millions of people are at risk of dying at any time. I'm not quite sure this really comes across, abroad.

Every year, HMRC, by its own estimates, fails to collect 46.8 billion of tax. See webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/202606... How about hiring more people to retrieve this avoided tax before suggesting funding defence by cutting welfare to the poorest and most vulnerable? Just saying.

very cool! interesting they're referring to the fuel engine in the ES-30 as a "range extender", suggesting they're going the Volt route of no direct drive linkage to the props. i'd figured the "power when you need it, efficiency when you don't" capacity of hybrids was going to be used for takeoff!

An experience that I wonder also applies here. When people ask me about the relevance of William Wallace on today's politics, I tend to mention that Bannockburn was 700 years ago. I am not sure people necessarily appreciate how long ago these events were when first asked to consider them.

A lot of far right politics is just becoming a generic "smash everything" button for anti-system voters. The level of success rests, I think, on how much they can convince a broader coalition to be happy with pressing it too.

The irony is that the elites that reduced the labour share of gdp that has created the financial uncertainty and political instability are egging on those impacted by their actions so that they can further avoid tax and regulation. In doing so, perpetuating a downward spiral of social unrest.

Fundamentally, Trump is in power because the wealthy and ultra wealthy valued tax cuts over government and were prepared to sign up to Trump and his entourage to enable that. Trumpism doesn't go away until the wealthy value society more. So... next time there's a crisis - bail in the wealthy.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

Gute Nachrichten in düsterer Weltlage: Überall, wo Öl importiert werden muss, treiben ausgerechnet die Kriege von Putin & Trump den Umstieg aufs E-Auto an: 100% Plus in Lateinamerika, 90% in Indien, 75% in Südostasien. In über 90 Ländern wächst der Markt. Fast jeder 3.
