The old RT route was really tight on space. A true squeeze through most of it. Could’ve maybe found some room at the old station stops, but anywhere that was tracked was really hugging the lines. It will be a nuisance if a bus breaks down in the busway.

And if you do want to create, it should require work, and attention, and focus, because that’s what gives the work meaning. If you’re building software as art, maybe there’s some logic to hand-building things… but to me, software is just tools, a means to an end.

Hand-made ceramics are more compelling than a set of IKEA bowls or a homesense candle holder. It’s not that there isn’t a place for the latter, but the former has substantially more meaning and feeling attached to it. It’s the same with music. You don’t have to be able to create to appreciate.

Eric McElroy @esmcelroy.ca · 12h
Writing software was always drudgery. It still is with AI, but it’s now far more scalable to deal with that drudgery. Making music isn’t drudgery. Music (and all art) is a work of love and care and attention. Why would you automate that?

If somebody today told me that they still do all their software development by hand, I’d call them crazy and maybe a little paranoid. Software development by hand is going the way of the hand-built automobile. If somebody told me they only listen to AI-generated music, I’d call them crazy.

So much respect for this, and the framing. ABC, the right wing version of Progress Toronto, has used health care workers/hospitals as reason to rip them out. This puts a lie to that (and on University ambulances can bypass cars in the wide bikelanes if needed). So many lies.

A forward-thinking, right-minded engineering firm could suggest lane narrowings and parking removals as the way to preserve most of the bikeways, then lie about the costs to come in as the lowest bidder, but I’m sure the minister would crush that bid even if it was cheapest on paper.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.
