Went for a late night walk through what’s open of the new Mirvish Village development and holy moly, it’s good. That’s all I could think the whole time. When this opens, it’s going to be a zoo (positive) for a long time. Such a nice parkette. More of a public plaza, perfect for the neighbourhood.

A friend of mine happened to be playing softball with Brad Bradford on Sunday night… It’s seems he’s comfortable making jokes about the island airport expansion, in case anybody had any doubts about where he stands on it! #topoli
A set of three text bubbles in a row, that read:
“Oh
So I played softball with Brad Bradford last night and he made a little joke about how he "heard they were gonna pave over Little Norway Park". He's a big turd for sure
Shit ball player too”

Drew some green lines - these are the best routes coming from the south. Lots of connections the these paths. No matter what, you end up in weird liminal car-centric St. Clair West.

None of the train stations I saw in the Netherlands last fall had housing on top! Rotterdam Centraal, Delft, Amsterdam Centraal, Haarlem Centraal, Maastricht, etc. Train stations can just be train stations as long as adjacent land is well built!

That was in the 212 legislation. When they lost their court challenge, they introduced a new section replacing the ask for permission section with one that wholly prohibits new bike lanes where it removes a lane of traffic.
Text extracted from image follows. Screenshot of section 195.3 of the Ontario highway traffic act from the Ontario laws (ORegs) site.

2025, c. 14, Sched. 5, s. 4.
v Section Amendments with date in force
(d/m/y)
Prohibition re reduction of lanes
195.3 (1) Except as permitted by the regulations, a municipality shall not, by by-law or otherwise, reduce or permit a reduction in the number of marked lanes available for travel by motor vehicles on a highway or a portion of a highway under the municipality's jurisdiction and control for any of the following purposes:
1. A bicycle lane.
2. Any other prescribed purpose. 2025, c. 14, Sched. 5, s. 5.
Transition
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply in respect of a purpose set out in that subsection if, on the day before the purpose is prohibited under subsection
(1), a contract has already been awarded or entered into for the construction or installation of any thing, or the marking of a highway, in respect of a purpose described in subsection (1) …

I think your point about the Ford/Trump similarities are apt but it goes even further than for Carney (who actually has power). Last week, Ford threatened to aggressively campaign against Crombie’s mayoral bid. Chow has to treat Ford like an abusive father. Step out of line, and he will slap you.

Saw this on the work slack. Not surprising. Seems like a pretty typical Gemini’s internal monologue.
Text post from slack with the username blacked out that says:

Gemini glitched out on me this morning. Not sure if this is Google's system prompt, or the LLM's self talk. Either way, there is a bit of a complex going on.
I bolded a few of my favourites.

That makes sense! I’d recommend buying the mounting accessory for handlebar with the “invisible” stick. It gives you better FOV than a direct mount. A few stills from some videos I took (and edited down). Two where I’m just holding the selfie stick in hand (on handlebar) and two helmet perspectives!

I biked to work on Friday morning, which was stupid, given the conditions of the roads AND bike lanes. There is truth out there for anyone with eyes to see. Adelaide (one of the busiest routes) was often impassable and was largely unrideable.
Bike lane on Adelaide, still covered in snow and wintry crud on Friday morning.Bike lane on Adelaide with one rut partially passable. Pedestrian visible ahead walking in bike lane because the sidewalk is worse. Roads to the right are very clear.Entry of Adelaide cycle track past Bathurst, in substantially worse condition that the road the right and comparable or worse than the sidewalk to the left. Snow blankets all but a two bicycle tire-wide rut on the bike lane. Spadina Avenue at Adelaide, showing a perfectly clear roadway. Large snowbanks are visible on the right, and while part of the sidewalk is cleared, it’s not as clear as the roadway ahead.

Crazy or stupid? Decided to bike to work this AM on the assumption that the major streets and bike lanes would be clear. It was harrowing and took me 15+ minutes longer than usual.

If you’re looking for a book that will make your brain feel funny, may I recommend “The Extreme Self” by Shumon Basar, Hans Obrist, and Douglas Coupland? Some excerpts below. I first saw this as an art installation at MoCA Toronto in Jan 2020. Published in 2021, the observations remain prescient.
Text from a page of the book “The Extreme Self”. The text reads in distorted font: “Next year is 1000 years away*”
There are two footnotes with the asterisks:
“Time is actually the lead character in the film” - Richard Linklater on his film Boyhood.
“We need to invent new tenses for time”A photo of a page in the book “The Extreme Self” which holds this quote:

“You sometimes hear people say that the nineteenth century really ended not in 1900 but in 1914. But there are different ways of measuring an epoch. [However] there is something satisfying about the fin de siècle, some confirmation of the rightness of the patterns we impose. As Focillon observed, the anxiety reflected by the fin de siècle is perpetual, and people don't wait for centuries to end before they express it.
Any date can be justified on some calculation or other?
Frank Kermode, The Sense of an Ending”Two posters of pages in the book “The Extreme Self”. One says “we’re now deep into the terminal phase of democracy. This phase involved voting in leaders whose primary goal is to dismantle democracy”. The other poses the question “is a benevolent dictator better than a bad democracy?” With the response being “is that the only choice I’ve got?”Photo of the cover of the book “The Extreme Self” by Shumon Basar, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Douglas Coupland. The cover features three emoji faces nested like Russian nesting dolls going from happy to alarmed to crying.

And the most interesting part of this consistency is how drastically it changes the topography of the neighbourhood. This is clearly evidenced by satellite imagery and street view data, along with comparisons to other cities. Compare, for instance, two random cross sections of Gary and Oak Park.
