I was making potato and leek soup and the recipe asked for five potatoes cubed. Even for potato soup, 125 potatoes seems a little excessive.

If you eject people from the ACA because they don't file insurance claims, you get rid of the people that subsidize the health insurance costs. That's a way to destroy Obamacare without admitting you're trying to destroy it.

Smoke from Wildfires Is a Growing Health Threat to Both People and Birds
Catastrophic wildfires are stalling decades of clean air progress. Now scientists are asking: How can we help birds navigate a hazier future?

I love the idea of a bird moving back into rural areas from the city and all the birds there hate him because he's so loud and simple

[quote posting]

Birds give up the complexity of song for volume in noisy places - so they sing louder but less interesting (to both humans & mates) songs in cities. When traffic noise in San Francisco fell due to COVID, birds began to sing more complex, quieter songs like they did 50 years ago!

The part of this article about trans people that are forced to have a biological marker on their driver's license, but also get tickets for having an appearance that doesn't conform to the marker is so similar to the discussion in "The Origins of Totalitarianism" by Hannah Arendt.

In Star Trek people often complain that replicated food is not as good as naturally produced food, which is weird when replicators are presumably using the same technology as transporters, which can perfectly replicate Spock every time. But is Spock getting less flavoursome over time? In this essay,

“When you start eating healthy, you don’t need toilet paper,” he claimed. “Animals in the wild have no residual stool on their anus.” He described a proper bowel movement to me this way: odorless, wipe-free, over in three to seven seconds and “nearly orgasmic.” Has he seen animals in the wild?!

A meme showing two adults in heavy punk attire walking down a sidewalk, holding hands with a small child dressed in bright pink and turquoise clothing and the cutest little denim battle jacket.

The adult on the left wears a heavily studded denim vest over black clothes. The adult on the right wears a studded leather jacket with white painted text: "PUNK'S UNDEAD"

Captioned text below: "Juvenile punks are brightly colored as a form of protective visibility, allowing their parents to find them easily and preventing injuries such as traffic mishaps and accidental mosh pit squishing. As they mature, punks develop their darker, studded adult plumage."

All the people that believe in replacement theory should read Hannah Arendt's description in The Origins of Totalitarianism of Arthur de Gobineau to realize how crazy they sound. He wrote 150 years earlier, but it's the same logic.

Last year I bought extra pungent garlic from the farmer's market. It was so strong when I was cooking that my partner could smell it in the SHOWER and thought something was wrong. On a possibly related note, did you know that if you cook with garlic enough, you can develop garlic blindness?
