seriously tho what’s a girl gotta do to be allowed to shout research ideas at people who study her conditions. do not make me get another phd after this. it’s actually p messed up that there is no form of patient feedback or focus grouping involved in research direction for most conditions

Shock as at least 1 in 5 children now need glasses - is social contagion to explain for the rise in testing? I Went To Specsavers, said I couldn't see the letters even though I could and they just gave me special lenses. I tried them on and now I have a headache. What are we doing to our kids?

It's exactly the same reason that streaming services are now frantically having to reinvent bundled cable tv. The technology of streaming was NEVER the product. AD FREE access to a large library of quality (or, frankly, familiar old comfort watches) on demand was the product. Not the platform.

Unlike cheap internet access or 3G phones (the true drivers of the 90s/2000s explosion) consumer AI is a means with no end. You can't sell that to consumers. Only to businesses that misunderstand the relationship between technology and profits/cost-savings. Because to them, it's magic beans.

In my twenties and thirties I would *regularly*, as in every few weeks, get people I vaguely knew asking why I didn't have kids, and not taking "because I've never wanted them and I'd be a crap dad, and there are enough unwanted kids with crap dads without me adding to that" as a good reason.

If "social contagion" were actually a thing, it would push in the direction of more, not fewer, people having kids.

Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.

Think about it: how often in the last decade have you white-knuckled the first season of a show that was really dragging only to get some promising developments in the last few minutes of S1? And then when you come back for S2, it's straight back to dragging and withholding.

An important corollary to the Surf Dracula tweet that I think should be talked about more, now that we're basically inundated with these types of shows, is that most of them don't get renewed, but even the ones that are don't turn into the weekly adventures of Surf Dracula in the second season.
Screenshot of a tweet from user @topherfluence: "back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get ot see him surf for 5 min in the finale"

"Why is society so doomerist when people are living longer, healthier, wealthier lives?" Maybe because wealth doesn't buy anything any more, only rents, and what it rents can be broken or taken away at a moment's notice without your knowledge or consent? Uncertainty about everything =/= happiness

comic from 8 years ago. just think about all the corporate mergers / acquisitions that have happened since then! crossover city: population me
Rae is standing with a bunny. Rae looks worried, but the bunny looks happy.
RAE: THE TWO BIGGEST FILM COMPANIES JUST MERGED... I'M A BIT WORRIED!
BUNNY: YEAH, BUT THINK OF THE CROSSOVER POTENTIAL!

Rae looks at her phone. She’s more worried now. The bunny remains happy.
RAE: NOW THEY BOUGHT THE WORLD'S BIGGEST GAME PUBLISHER…
BUNNY: I SMELL A CROSSOVER!

Rae remains worried, while the bunny seems even happier.
RAE: WELL, THEY JUST BOUGHT ALL THE AMERICAN SPORTS LEAGUES, TOO...
BUNNY: CROSSOVER CITY! POPULATION: ME.

Rae and the bunny are now in a barren wasteland on fire. The bunny is laying on the ground. They both look beat up.
RAE: THEY NOW OWN 75% OF THE WATER SUPPLY, AND WAR IS BEING FOUGHT OVER THE REMAINING 25%
BUNNY: CROSS... OVER...

The depressing thing about the OpenAI maths results is that, however good they are, they're missing the whole point of mathematics. It's closer to art than to engineering, for the most part. The point of a proof is not just to exist, it's to be understood by a human mind.
