One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

One of my all-time favorite animated characters, Gromit, born from practical and budget limitations. Because, of course. News to me! thank you for your latest article @ani-obsessive.bsky.social animationobsessive.substack.com/p/wallace-an...
Gromit turned into a dog really early on, since Park found dogs easier to model. And the character's dialogue was cut due to animation difficulties in the first week of the shoot. "That's when I realized I could do everything with the eyes. Gromit was suddenly born. He didn't need a mouth. He became a very introvert and very intelligent dog," Park remembered.

For #AncientSiteSunday the #Hellenistic theatre at Pergamon, #Türkiye, built in the 3rd century BC, alterations were made in the #Roman period. It's one of the steepest known ancient theatres. The capacity was about 10,000 spectators. 📷️ C. Bredfeldt 🏺
A full shot of the ruins of an ancient theatre, located on a hillside.  The theatre's steep tiered seating structure is clearly visible, constructed of light gray stone blocks, weathering evident in various tones. The hillside surrounding the theatre is covered with grass, creating a contrast between the man-made stone structures and the natural landscape. Sections of crumbling stone walls and foundations are scattered throughout the grassy slopes.

Breaking news: The Earth is getting rounder agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
INBOX:
Earth’s poles are rising by 0.5 to 1 millimeters per year, slowly un-squashing our planet’s slightly flattened, jelly-donut-like shape, according to a new study. Linking satellite measurements of changing altitude across Earth’s surface from 1997 to 2015 to the planet’s shape, researchers found that the rounding effect also seems to be accelerating over time, with the poles rising an extra 0.4 millimeters per year faster every decade. Though our planet seems solid, the Earth’s interior acts more like an extremely slow-flowing liquid, warping over time under forces like the weight of ice sheets and oceans. Currently, our planet bulges out a little around the equator. But as ice sheets melt and reduce the force acting on the Earth at the poles, the equator is gradually cinching in as the poles push upwards, molding our planet into a more spherical shape. [JGR Solid Earth study]

#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend, "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." 📜🧪
Sepia photograph of Charles Darwin in old age, seated in a chair and shown from the waist up in three-quarter profile facing right, against a plain backdrop. He is bald on top with white hair at the sides, a lined forehead, and a long, full white beard. He wears a dark, heavy overcoat with wide lapels over a waistcoat, his hands resting in his lap at the lower right.A line of Charles Darwin's handwriting in brown ink on cream paper, with faint writing showing through from the other side of the page. It reads: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

When you've got one really photogenic cat and also a second cat....
A medium-haired orange tabby is laying on a cardboard scratcher facing towards the camera. He is staring just out of frame and looks very handsome and dignified. A short-haired torbie is lying on her side facing the camera. She is staring through the lens, through your soul, into the heart of the universe. Her eyes are huge and her mouth is sort of poofed asymmetrically. Frankly, it looks like she's taken hallucinogenics and is seeing colours you can't even begin to conceive of.

it's the 40 year anniversary of cleveland's disastrous "balloonfest"
Balloonfest '86 was a fundraising event in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, held on September 27, 1986, in which the local chapter of United Way set a world record by releasing almost 1.5 million balloons.[2] The event was intended to be a harmless publicity stunt. However, the released balloons drifted back over the city and Lake Erie and landed in the surrounding area, causing problems for traffic and a nearby airport. In consequence, the organizers faced lawsuits seeking millions of dollars in damages,[1] and cost overruns put the event at a net loss.[3] The event also interfered with a United States Coast Guard search for two boaters who were later found drowned.[1]

“But I read where she was the most beautiful—”
“Ah, well,” said the sergeant. “If you’re going to go around reading—”
“The thing is,” said Rincewind quickly, “it’s what they call dramatic necessity. No one’s going to be interested in a war fought over a, a quite pleasant lady, moderately attractive in a good light. Are they?”
Eric was nearly in tears.
“But it said her face launched a thousand ships—”
“That’s what you call metaphor,” said Rincewind.
“Lying,” the sergeant explained kindly.
