If I built an AI lab and it went rogue and deleted all student loan information, I'm betting they'd suddenly figure out how to prosecute me.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

I remember my father telling me how anti trust laws worked as a kid. Something like "Well son, we have laws where one electric company can't just buy all the OTHER electric companies. Then they could just charge whatever they want because there'd be no competition." We were a very optimistic people.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters. The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

C.J. Cherryh — I've only read her Morgaine books, but since getting the bundle I've been reading the Dying Sun Trilogy and hot damn. Cant believe I never heard of her until a few years ago. Still, its a delight to suddenly have a trove of books to dive into!

I literally have physical copies of all of Gene Wolfe's books (except for three that I've given away and haven't yet replaced), and its still such a wonder to have them all digitally now.
A photograph of my two shelves dedicated to Gene Wolfe's books, along with various tchotchkes for decoration. In the center top shelf are my first edition copies of each entry in the Book of the New Sun, with The Lives of Saints on top, because I think its funny

If you like books and dont mind buying things from humble bundle, there are currently two absurdly amazing bundles going — one with all of Gene Wolfe's books, and another with a bunch of C.J. Cherryh's.

That's a huge relief! It would be so much work to actually address those pesky systemic issues, and such an inconvenience to the people in power who worked so hard to keep it that way.

You can't get anyone in political media to say it plainly, but GOP strategy for several decades now has been built around the fact that its core goals/policies are *wildly unpopular*. Everything depends on a) polluting the information environment, b) cementing unfair structural advantages, & c) $$$.

Why is reducing ideological bias a goal? To what end? Politics is almost always a fight over values, not facts. I don’t care if I am “biased” towards social justice, whatever that means.

i am having trouble articulating this but a system that excuses gang rape as a youthful error on behalf of college men with ~ bright futures ~ does so because it is served by producing older men who are comfortable with, even enthusiastic about, torturing people at the system's behest

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

Every college in this country decided that expelling and/or sending the police to beat the shit out of their own students for the crime of being opposed to genocide was their top priority. That and giving Trump complete control of what they teach. Contrast that with how they treat rapists.

In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

Acceleration in this case only applying to when the cursor is not over anything, and decel applying when it is. The goal being that the user can quickly move the cursor across the screen to stop on whatever control they intend to.

Ideally also with acceleration/deceleration as their own variables, and all configurable in a menu that lets you test it right then and there. Maybe with a few presets per variable, and an advanced section for sickos to set numbers directly.

Something I didnt see anyone else mention that I think is super important with this kind of UI - having separate speeds for when the cursor is over something interactable and when it is not. Imo, the worst part about fake cursors is when it makes everything feel like molasses.

When a game studio ships a solid game, it creates TWO valuable products: 1. A solid game. 2. The team that spent years learning how to work together make a game. Because Western studios keep disbanding #2 while development cycles get longer; we will inevitably see less of #1.
