Mary Astell first suggested higher education for women in 1694. Emily Davies petitioned Cambridge for access in 1866. Equal access to HE was finally achieved in 1995. Three bloody centuries.

Are these the same UK Higher Education providers who have all uncritically subscribed to LLM platforms like ChatGPT Edu? Who continually recontract with the same proprietary software providers like Ex Libris Group for library systems?
The report findings reveal that on a scale of one to five, where one demonstrates institutions are at a reactive stage of digital maturity and five an integrated stage, the aggregated sector score was 2.84. This indicates that, on average, UK higher education providers have moved beyond reactive investment in digital infrastructure and are embedding more strategic approaches and proactive practices.

The results also show:

Reliable, safe and secure digital infrastructure is the highest-rated aspect of the assessment
Digital capability, including AI capability, has the lowest maturity ratings
Funding or investment is the most frequently cited single barrier to further progress, followed by staff capacity and time

This ridiculous number of applications is, in my view, the result of 2 nightmare developments happening concurrently 1.the precariousness of the job market for young PhD graduates which then fuels further: 2.the AI tools enabling overproduction of proposals. #Research #ERC #ResearchFunding #Academia
Just a screenshot with an EU logo saying that the 2026 call has attracted considerable interest from the research community with 21,627 applications submitted.

And add the cost of assessing it on top of that. It is phenomenal how much time we spend just so that we can maintain the ideology of meritocratic competition.

I really appreciate this initiative, and I already peer review for diamond OA journals and am on the editorial board for one, but I think the info on the webpage conflates OA costs (free to read and publish) and other open research values. Not all diamond OA journals are scholar led for instance.

As I've noted before (blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsoci...), outsourcing – especially on technical infrastructure – ultimately costs more, is less secure, and is less effective than investing in people and building things in-house.

The conclusion is NOT "we need to debias LLMs" Besides that it's impossible, it also detracts from the point, which is: We shouldn't use machines to offload of the very cognition that is constitutive of the work to be done & supercharge existing inequities and injustices in the process. 🧵

Metascientists need to be required to read history of science. We already know so much about how an individual experiment is not a miraculous thing that is supposed to single-handedly produce fail-proof scientific facts. More than science, it's our assumptions about science that we must fix.
